Role Summary

Director, Global Alliances with a focus on Oncology, responsible for shaping and managing AbbVie’s strategic external collaborations from discovery through commercialization. Lead alliance management for complex, high-value partnerships, build global and cross-region relationships (notably Asia), and drive governance, due diligence, and value optimization across the oncology portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and Champion Strategic Alliances: Drive alignment between AbbVie and global partners to ensure shared vision, governance, and seamless execution of Oncology programs across discovery, development, and commercialization.
  • Strengthen Global Relationships: Build and maintain trusted partnerships across regions—particularly in Asia-Pacific—leveraging language and cultural fluency to foster collaboration and joint problem-solving.
  • Lead Strategic Reviews and Governance: Manage governance forums, including Joint Steering Committees, to drive data-informed decision-making, assess alliance performance, and provide recommendations to senior leadership at key contractual inflection points.
  • Engage and Influence Executive Leadership: Partner with senior leaders to shape partnership strategy, influence business decisions, and resolve complex issues with agility and foresight.
  • Be a Strategic, Enterprise-Level Advisor: Provide forward-looking insights on alliance health, opportunities, and risk mitigation to support value-maximizing decisions.
  • Advance the Oncology Portfolio: Align cross-functional teams and partners around integrated development strategies to accelerate milestones and value creation.
  • Support Business Development and Due Diligence: Collaborate with Ventures, Search & Evaluation and Business Development to evaluate, structure, and negotiate new collaborations; support due diligence and integration planning.
  • Negotiate and Optimize Partnerships: Identify opportunities to refine terms, negotiate amendments, or restructure partnerships to enhance scientific and commercial success while sustaining long-term value.
  • Drive Continuous Improvement: Implement processes, tools, and communication frameworks that foster transparency and operational excellence across partnerships.
  • Promote Excellence and Partnering Culture: Establish best-in-class alliance practices, mentor team members, and represent AbbVie externally as a partnering leader in the biopharma community.

Qualifications

  • Language Skills: Bilingual fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese strongly preferred.
  • Experience: 5–10 years in pharmaceutical development, commercialization, alliance management, or corporate ventures/external innovation, ideally within Oncology.
  • Education: Advanced scientific degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent) strongly preferred, with Oncology expertise highly valued.
  • Global Partnership Expertise: Proven success leading complex, cross-border alliances, ideally with Asia-based partners.
  • Strategic and Business Acumen: Experience in strategic analysis, business development, consulting, or investment banking a plus.
  • Leadership and Influence: Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence VP- and executive-level stakeholders.
  • Proactive Leadership: Self-starter who anticipates challenges, drives progress, and navigates ambiguity with sound judgment.
  • Scientific and Commercial Insight: Deep understanding of drug R&D and/or commercialization across early and late-stage programs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Successful leadership within matrixed, global organizations, delivering results across diverse teams.
