Role Summary
The Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is a senior-level role responsible for creating and implementing programs that ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental protection for all Insmed locations. Key duties include risk assessment, developing safety policies, managing training programs, and ensuring compliance with regulations such as OSHA and EPA. The Director will collaborate with leadership and employees to foster a culture of safety across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and oversee EHS programs, policies, and procedures to protect employees and the environment.
- Identify and assess workplace risks, including hazardous materials and industrial processes, and develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations; stay current with changes.
- Identify safety training needs and develop and coordinate training programs for employees.
- Develop and manage emergency response plans and investigate accidents and environmental incidents.
- Conduct and manage internal and external EHS audits and surveys, analyze results, and report to senior management and stakeholders.
- Advise senior leaders on EHS performance and improvement strategies, drive EHS initiatives, and manage EHS staff.
- Build and maintain EHS management systems, including documentation, SOPs, risk assessments, incident investigation protocols, reporting, and emergency plans.
- Design and deliver EHS training programs for internal teams and contractors, including orientations and maintaining compliance records.
- Oversee EHS practices within office environments, including ergonomics, emergency preparedness, and workplace safety programs.
- Chair and lead safety committee meetings and safety circles to reinforce proactive safety and align on risks, controls, and lessons learned.
- Establish an EHS vision, policy framework, and long-term roadmap aligned with operational goals and risk, including program reviews in accordance with applicable standards.
- Partner with Facilities and Lab teams to oversee EHS plans across project execution phases.
- Provide guidance to senior staff on EHS requirements and performance; oversee implementation of EHS programs across teams.
- Act as the primary Insmed liaison for EHS matters with outside agencies and as the regulatory expert; monitor changes and communicate impacts.
- Oversee company-wide training programs related to EHS compliance; provide onsite training and develop computer-based modules; ensure oversight of training for employees and contractors.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive EHS experience, ideally in pharma, energy, or chemical industries.
- Deep understanding of EHS regulations and best practices for chemistry/biology labs and pharma manufacturing sites.
- Proven track record of developing and leading EHS programs at scale.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and influence without authority.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to train and motivate diverse teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Relevant certifications such as CSP, SST, CIH, OSHA 30, OSHA 500/501, and OSHA 62 are preferred.
- Willingness to travel to lab and project sites as needed.
- Leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills essential for interacting with employees, management, and external agencies.
- Experience with EHS management systems.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Supervisory and team management experience with ability to evaluate and coach staff.
- Ability to independently research technical information and regulations and provide fact-based interpretations.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
