Director, Employee Relations and Workplace Effectiveness

Responsibilities
- Serve as SME for employee relations; partner with HR Business Partners on complex/sensitive employee situations.
- Lead/support workplace investigations (complaints, conduct concerns, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, workplace behavior, policy matters); conduct objective, thorough, timely investigations and make findings/recommendations.
- Provide guidance on corrective action, performance concerns, conflict resolution, and employment decisions; ensure appropriate documentation and consistency.
- Provide managers/HRBPs practical guidance on performance management, accountability, communication, conflict resolution, and difficult conversations.
- Support development/review of performance improvement plans, written warnings, corrective actions, and related documentation.
- Help distinguish performance vs. conduct vs. capability vs. workplace relationship issues and determine interventions; build manager capability while escalating higher-risk matters.
- Partner with HR to improve team effectiveness, employee engagement/communication/retention; address recurring workplace themes and pain points.
- Support compliance/policy management: consistent application of HR policies and employment laws; maintain/enhance employee relations policies/templates; translate evolving practices/regulatory requirements into guidance.
- Partner to develop/deliver training for managers/employees; identify training needs from trends.
- Establish tracking/reporting of employee relations cases, outcomes, themes, and trends; analyze workforce data and provide actionable insights.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelorโ€™s degree and 10+ years progressive HR experience in employee relations, investigations, and performance management (or equivalent).
- Proven independent experience conducting/documenting complex workplace investigations.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Strong U.S. employment laws/HR best-practices; multi-state support preferred.
- Experience partnering with HRBPs and advising managers/leaders on complex matters.
- Strong judgment to assess risk and determine escalation.
- Excellent written/verbal/interpersonal communication and discretion.
- Strong organization/documentation; ability to manage multiple matters.
- Preferred: experience in growing/changing or highly regulated organizations; biotech/pharma/life sciences a plus.
- Comfortable operating as responsibilities evolve.

Work Location/Conditions
- Remote within the U.S.; preference for New England region; travel to Cambridge, MA several times/year and attend events as needed.
- Must have reliable remote work setup (privacy, internet, phone, video-conference capability).
