Role Summary

The Director, Capital Projects leads strategic, large-value capital projects critical to enabling AbbVie's manufacturing network to deliver innovative medicines. The role requires strong strategic planning and exceptional execution capabilities to achieve milestones and navigate brownfield projects within an operating facility. You will ensure objectives related to EHS, scope, schedule, cost, quality, and compliance while coordinating with consultants, architecture/engineering firms, construction contractors, and internal teams. The position reports to the Director, US Strategic Projects in the Operations Transformation organization and is site-based with travel to other project sites as required.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for compliance to AbbVie EHS standards and ensure Zero incidents or non-conformances during construction of all the projects.
  • Deliver top-tier project performance with superior design and flawless implementation of project elements, lean execution involving agile methodologies combined with quality and schedule expectations.
  • Achieve all project objectives related to scope, cost, schedule, EHS, compliance and quality. Manage and be responsible for all phases of project execution.
  • Drive integration of project plans with manufacturing and operations planning to ensure minimal impact to ongoing operations.
  • Implement all applicable EHS and Engineering Policies and procedures and ensure compliance with them.
  • Drive EHS performance of all project activities including construction safety. Ensure that project related work does not impact existing facilities or operations.
  • Drive implementation of best-in-class design within the scope boundaries in consultation with key operations stakeholders.
  • Monitor and manage the risks associated with the project ensuring appropriate plans are in place to address and mitigate risks as they arise. Escalate risks to steering committee, when required.
  • Demonstrate exceptional financial acumen and control over costs including ability to plan and project capital and expense spend over the project duration. Provide LBE and estimates to complete on a monthly basis.
  • Demonstrate agility to push the envelope of project execution to drive efficiencies of resources and costs including implementation of value engineering, alternate options and scenarios, fall back strategies.
  • Develop a sourcing strategy with procurement and be responsible to manage relationships with consultants, Architectural/Engineering firms, construction contractors including participation in project review meetings, contract negotiations and dispute resolution.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive risk management strategies to mitigate potential issues during development of projects. Proactively take steps required to mitigate any impact on schedule, cost, quality and EHS.
  • Drive KPIs to measure and monitor performance of strategic projects in the US, effectively communicate performance and risks to the steering committees and ensure top-tier governance of the projects.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels in the organization. Present project performance to Steering committees, Senior leadership, regulators and government agencies.

Qualifications

  • BS, Engineering or equivalent technical degree; A formal Project Management certification is preferred
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience as an Engineering Leader/ Projects / Operations Leader across multiple technologies
  • In-depth technical and operational expertise in manufacturing technologies related to API manufacturing using chemical synthesis. Expertise in additional modalities like BDS/BDP, OSD, Medical Device, and Packaging Operations will be preferred
  • Proven inclusive management and leadership capabilities of diverse, cross-functional teams
  • Listens to and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations. Able to communicate with senior leadership, regulators and government agencies.
  • Excellent negotiation skills combined with financial acumen and experience of leading projects with a cross functional team
  • Able to lead change and deliver results across a matrix organization.
  • Business acumen and direct financial planning/budgeting experience required including P&L responsibility.
  • Ability to mentor and develop next generation of leaders

Education
