Position Summary
The Counsel, AI Governance, Law & Compliance provides day-to-day legal and compliance support for the design, development, deployment, and ongoing oversight of AI systems across the enterprise. Translates evolving AI laws/standards into practical guidance, reviews AI use cases for legal/ethical risk, and helps drive responsible AI adoption.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel on AI initiatives across the AI lifecycle (intake review, risk classification, development, deployment, monitoring, decommissioning).
- Conduct/document AI legal risk assessments (IP, privacy, bias/fairness, transparency, safety, accountability, third-party risk).
- Support implementation of enterprise AI governance (model inventory, lifecycle controls, human oversight, incident response workflows).
- Track/interpret global AI laws and translate into policies, playbooks, standards, and training.
- Review/negotiates AI contractual provisions (data use, model training, indemnities, audit rights).
- Advise on generative AI and high-risk use cases (R&D, commercial, medical, manufacturing, enabling).
- Partner on privacy issues (automated decision-making, profiling, cross-border transfers, data subject rights).
- Support engagement with regulators/industry groups; contribute to internal responsible AI thought leadership.
- Design/deliver AI governance/compliance training; maintain documentation for audit/regulatory inquiries.
Qualifications
- JD (or equivalent) and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 5β7 years legal experience (top law firm or in-house).
- 2+ years substantive AI legal/compliance or AI governance experience.
- Working knowledge of key AI laws/frameworks (e.g., EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, OECD; U.S. guidance).
- Ability to translate complex regulations into pragmatic, business-aligned guidance; strong drafting/analytical/stakeholder skills; independent operation; sound judgment.
Preferred Skills
- CIPP and/or IAPP AIGP; life sciences industry experience.
- Privacy law familiarity (GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA/CPRA, China PIPL).
- AI assurance artifacts/governance tooling; ML concepts/data science workflows; third-party AI risk reviews/contracting.
