Job Description
Associate General Counsel, Patent Prosecution (In-house) for AbbVie’s Intellectual Property, Transactions, and Innovation legal team. Supports AbbVie’s pharmaceutical products; hybrid work model (on site 3+ days/week) in North Chicago, IL; Waltham, MA; South San Francisco, CA; or Irvine, CA. Develop and implement IP strategies for AbbVie products and product candidates, with a focus on neuroscience.

Responsibilities:
- Maximize AbbVie’s competitive position through creation and implementation of IP strategies
- Provide legal advice and counsel to cross-functional R&D and business teams on IP-related matters
- Draft, file, and prosecute strategically useful patent applications worldwide (directly and via outside counsel)
- Challenge and defend patents in IPR, opposition, interference, and other post-grant proceedings
- Conduct prior art searches, analyze third-party patent positions, and perform due diligence to support business development activities

Qualifications:
- JD from an accredited law school; state bar admission enabling in-house practice (specific state not required); registration to practice before the USPTO
- 8+ years patent law experience as attorney or patent agent (substantial U.S. and foreign patent prosecution)
- Experience with India, China, and emerging markets (plus)
- Technical background relevant to pharmaceutical patent prosecution (small molecule and/or biological discovery & development and/or technical degree in molecular biology/biotech/biochemistry/biology/chemistry/chemical engineering/biomedical engineering)
- Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and people skills
- Ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines
