The Associate Director of Construction & Contractor Safety is responsible for managing the development, implementation/maintenance, global oversight, and governance of environment, health and safety (EHS) programs. Take action to minimize risk to employees and facilities and reduce the company’s environmental footprint, minimizing EHS liability.
Responsibilities:
- People manager role driving past compliance to implement best-in-industry performance and the AbbVie “Zero Believe it” culture.
- Visible, trusted leader who spends time in the field observing, coaching, and reinforcing best practices on active jobsites.
Key Objectives/Deliverables:
- Provide technical support to oversee contractor safety programs, tools, training, and compliance to meet/exceed regulatory requirements.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to develop and sustain EHS systems, processes, and programs.
- Lead incident, near-miss, and unsafe condition investigations; share and act on lessons learned.
- Drive continuous improvement and leading-indicator performance.
- Ensure AI and new technologies have the highest level safety considerations embedded.
- Implement AbbVie internal technical standards and EHS network best practices.
- Introduce automated tools/technology for safety compliance, analysis, and evaluation.
- Partner with construction companies to ensure high standards for construction/contractor employee health & safety.
Additional skills/preferences:
- Experience presenting EHS KPIs to senior leadership.
- Experience with major construction projects and greenfield sites.
- Professional certifications (e.g., project management) and EHS/construction certifications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s (EHS-related, Engineering) + 10+ years EHS experience OR Master’s + 8–10 years; manufacturing/R&D EHS required. EHS professional certification preferred (not required).
- Experience implementing EHS regulations, conducting investigations, working with regulatory agencies/external organizations, and managing cross-functional teams.
- Ability to plan against business targets; review/approve plans; balance resources.
- Ability to assess issues, coordinate response, present options, and develop procedures to prevent recurrence.
- Ability to build relationships, resolve conflict, influence/negotiation, and represent EHS in decisions.
- Ability to manage projects and programs.
