Role Summary

Associate Director, Medical Science Liaison – Respiratory US. This role sits within Viatris US Medical Affairs as a field-based Medical Science Liaison (MSL) responsible for non-promotional, evidence-based engagement with Healthcare Providers and other external stakeholders. The MSL operates remotely within US respiratory territory, reporting to the US Respiratory MSL Team Lead, and travels extensively (approximately 75%–80%), with potential overnight and weekend travel. The role emphasizes independence, scientific credibility, and alignment with Medical Affairs’ strategic objectives.

Responsibilities

  • KOL Relationship Management: Understand KOL medical education needs, understand competitor medical affairs educational offerings, align KOL selection with overarching company strategy.
  • Innovation: Understand medical innovation, uniquely meet HCP education needs, increase use of innovative education materials.
  • Engage in non-promotional, truthful, evidence-based, and non-misleading communications with KOLs/HCPs using educational materials approved by the Medical Review Committee (MRC).
  • Draft, execute, monitor & adapt independent US MSL Stakeholder Engagement Plans for target KOLs/HCPs on an ongoing basis in alignment with the US Respiratory MSL Team Lead and US Respiratory Medical Lead.
  • Receive support & direction for all normal asset-/disease state-level MSL business activities including all business travel, HCP interactions and congress attendance from US Respiratory MSL Team Lead.
  • Provide a summary of day-to-day activities & achievements on a monthly written basis to US Respiratory MSL Team Lead.
  • Submit expense reports and PTO/vacation requests in a timely manner.
  • Document HCP Interactions in VEEVA.
  • Respond with Reactive Medical Communications to Unsolicited Medical Requests (UMRs) received from HCPs or other external stakeholders.
  • Identify & communicate internally the activities of rival Medical Affairs organizations with our target KOLs/HCPs.
  • Identify & communicate internally the unmet medical education needs of our target KOLs/HCPs; share difficult concepts and negotiates with colleagues to adopt a different point of view.
  • Partner with US Respiratory Medical Portfolio Lead (MPL) to develop independent, new, innovative, nonpromotional, proactive and reactive medical education materials that uniquely address unmet educational needs of target KOLs/HCPs.
  • Gather & communicate internally KOL insights related to independent US Medical and/or overarching company objectives or strategies.
  • Develop & communicate internally independent Ad Board, Congress & Customer Insight Reports.
  • Staff independent Medical Affairs booths at congresses/convention.
  • Provide training to internal Viatris functions on products and disease states using materials approved by the MRC or the Viatris Promotional Material Approval Process (VMap) as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of respiratory experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry. Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) required; a combination of experience and/or education will be considered.
  • Knowledge of the US Respiratory Medical Science Liaison (MSL) roles and responsibilities, clinical trials, relevant therapeutic areas, SOPs, Standards for Interactions with U.S. Healthcare Providers, promotional laws/regulations, the PhRMA Code, ACCME Standards, and the Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, develop, and manage collaborative relationships with KOLs and other medical professionals, external academic institutions and PAGs. Strong analytic and organizational skills in managing, interpreting, and presenting clinical data. Ability to listen for insights and draw implications for Viatris. Self-motivated, accountable, with high performance standards. Able to set and accomplish goals individually and in a team, comfortable with change, and committed to DEI principles.
  • Position functions semi-autonomously with no direct supervisory responsibilities. Reports to US Respiratory MSL Team Lead (Coach/Player).
  • US Remote. Extensive travel (75%–80% of time, which may change) is a requirement; may include overnight stays and/or weekend travel; remote participation available. Geographical territory may change over time.
  • US GEOGRAPHICAL TERRITORIES; Required to reside within the territory. Central: NM, TX, OK, CO, KS, WY, NE, SD, ND, MT; Pacific West: AZ, CA, NV, UT, OR, ID, WA, AK, HI. Preferable home-cities include Denver, Dallas, Kansas City and Los Angeles/San Francisco respectively.
