Role Summary

The Asset Strategy Leader is an experienced and established leader with the ability to influence across multiple functions and levels within AbbVie, serving as the matrix leader with overall accountability for an asset from discovery to end of life cycle. They guide and direct the creation and execution of a comprehensive asset strategy and phase-appropriate brand strategies for one or multiple assets, integrating all functional activities relevant to development, registration, manufacture, and commercialization. The position requires broad enterprise-level leadership and cross-functional interaction, with the asset's value optimized within the overall portfolio. Based onsite in Irvine, CA or North Chicago, IL.

Responsibilities

  • Chairs an Asset Strategy Team (AST) as the enterprise leader and primary contact for Pipeline Governance and senior management.
  • Lead the creation, articulation, and endorsement of integrated cross-functional Global Asset Strategy and Brand Strategy for all aspects of product development, commercialization, and lifecycle management; ensure timely interactions with Pipeline Governance and governance bodies within AbbVie.
  • Contextualize asset recommendations within AbbVieโ€šร„รดs enterprise objectives.
  • Maintain primary responsibility for deliverables including a functionally aligned Global Asset Strategy and Product Development Plan (PDP); review data to identify opportunities, risks, and mitigations.
  • Build collaborative relationships with governance teams and executives to enable timely, multi-directional interactions with PCM Governance at milestones and as issues arise.
  • Ensure appropriate resourcing and budgeting; collaborate with supporting teams to align strategy and execution with the Target Product Profile (TPP), Asset Plan, and PDP; track progress with the Portfolio Project Manager.
  • Validate program viability from scientific and commercial perspectives; develop Go/No-Go decision points and present data to Pipeline Governance and senior management.
  • Act as strategic advisor to cross-functional teams (Global Commercial Team, Global Brand Team, CMC, Integrated Evidence Strategy, Value and Access, Regulatory, etc.); align deliverables with key plan components.
  • Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe culture, maintain a function-neutral prioritization approach, and coach team members per High Performing Teams standards; focus AST on strategy and decision-making and effective communication.
  • Represent the AST in external engagements requiring broad cross-functional input (e.g., Advisory Boards, regulatory interactions); demonstrate executive presence and clear communication.
  • Monitor competitive environment and industry trends to assess impact on programs; stay current on developments in drug development and the pharmaceutical industry; understand asset positioning relative to competitors.
  • Focus discussions on critical priorities; ask the right questions and consider diverse viewpoints to determine optimal paths forward.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€šร„รดs Degree required; Doctoral or MBA highly preferred.
  • 5โ€šร„รฌ8 years of relevant leadership experience in pharmaceutical/biotech Commercial, R&D, Regulatory, or Operations; 10+ years preferred; deep expertise across drug development and/or commercialization, often across multiple therapy areas and development phases.
  • Strong strategic thinking, leadership, and problem-solving abilities; ability to apply new knowledge to asset strategy and enterprise priorities.
  • Experience across multiple device product development is ideal, with emphasis on facial aesthetics programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams in a global, matrixed environment; broad understanding of all phases of drug commercialization.
  • Ability to exercise objective judgment and create pragmatic solutions; ability to obtain stakeholder input and move programs forward amid uncertainty.
  • Proven communication and influence with senior executives; ability to rapidly assimilate knowledge related to drug development and commercialization.
  • Deep expertise in strategy and execution for commercialization involving R&D, Regulatory, Commercial, and/or Manufacturing.
