Role Summary
Vice President of Research Business Insights & Technology leading a global team to define and execute the technology strategy for drug discovery, data, and AI at Bristol Myers Squibb. Oversees a budget around $100 million and a workforce of ~175 analysts, data scientists, and engineers, shaping the future of medicine and accelerating the pipeline through advanced analytics and translational insights.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Vision & Leadership: Develop and execute a bold BI&T strategy aligned with portfolio goals; champion GenAI, AI/ML, automation, and cloud computing to prioritize drug candidates and intervention points; articulate a forward-looking vision for data-driven innovation.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure reliable daily operation of systems and tools (ELN, LIMS, analytics) and continuous improvement.
- Global Team Leadership: Mentor and empower a global team; foster an inclusive, high-performance culture and build leadership capability.
- Innovation in Drug Discovery: Drive in silico design and discovery analytics; develop AI/ML models with computational chemistry and chemoinformatics groups; stay abreast of advances to pioneer new approaches in small molecules and biologics.
- Translational & Precision Medicine: Build capabilities to integrate preclinical, clinical, and real-world data to inform early development; partner with pharmacometrics and informatics groups.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Bridge scientific and technical teams; deliver technology solutions enabling decision-making; communicate opportunities to senior stakeholders.
- Portfolio & Budget Management: Oversee analytics projects and platforms with >$100M annual budget; prioritize high scientific impact; evaluate build vs. buy and external partnerships.
- Data & Platform Strategy: Develop enterprise R&D data infrastructure and platforms; ensure data governance and quality; promote reproducibility and knowledge sharing.
- External Partnerships & Thought Leadership: Represent BMS externally; establish collaborations and present innovations at conferences.
- Drive a Data-Driven Culture: Promote a predict-first approach; support training and adoption of analytics tools across project teams.
Qualifications
- Masterโs degree or equivalent in relevant fields (e.g., Computer Science, computational sciences, MBA).
- ~15+ years in R&D Analytics leadership within biopharma/technology; proven impact applying AI/data to drug discovery and early development.
- Strategic visionary with experience transforming organizations or strategies; track record of technology innovation at scale.
- Global people leadership of large teams (100+ employees) and multi-million-dollar budgets; strong talent development capabilities.
- Cross-functional influence and ability to work with executive governance; strong communication and storytelling skills.
- Deep expertise in data science, AI/ML, analytics tools; familiarity with computational chemistry/biology, bioinformatics, statistics, and AI-driven drug design.
- Innovation mindset with results orientation; ability to navigate ambiguity and deliver outcome-focused results.
- Industry awareness of biopharma R&D tech trends; external networking is a plus.
- Excellent communicator capable of articulating complex analytics concepts to diverse audiences, including C-suite.
