Role Summary
Vice President of Research Business Insights & Technology at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS). Lead a global team to define and execute the technology strategy for drug discovery and research, with a budget around $100 million, guiding AI/ML, data science, and predictive modeling to accelerate early R&D and translate scientific insights into medicines.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Vision & Leadership: Develop and execute a bold Business Insights and Technology strategy aligned with portfolio goals; champion cutting-edge technologies to predict, design, assess, and prioritize drug intervention points and candidates; inspire data-driven innovation.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure systems and technology operate reliably; continuously improve ELN, LIMS, analytic tools, and related systems.
- Global Team Leadership: Lead a global team; foster an inclusive, high-performance culture; attract top talent and develop future leaders in data, AI, and technology.
- Innovation in Drug Discovery: Drive in silico design and discovery analytics; develop AI/ML models for molecule design, target ID, and lead optimization; stay current with advances to pioneer new approaches in small molecules and biologics.
- Translational & Precision Medicine: deliver data and insights bridging preclinical, clinical, and real-world evidence to inform early development; partner with computational groups.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Bridge scientific and technical teams; deliver technology solutions to enable decision-making across research; communicate opportunities to senior R&D stakeholders.
- Portfolio & Budget Management: Oversee analytics projects and platforms with a budget >$100M; prioritize high-impact initiatives and evaluate build vs. buy options and external partnerships.
- Data & Platform Strategy: Develop enterprise R&D data infrastructure and platforms; ensure data governance, quality, reproducibility, and knowledge sharing.
- External Partnerships & Thought Leadership: Represent BMS externally; pursue collaborations with academia and industry; present at conferences and publish innovations.
- Drive a Data-Driven Culture: Promote a predict-first approach; support training, communication, and adoption of analytics tools within research project teams.
Qualifications
- Scientific & Technical Training: Masterβs degree or equivalent in relevant fields (e.g., Computer Science, computational sciences, MBA) with understanding of drug discovery processes.
- Proven R&D Analytics Leadership: ~15+ years in biopharma/tech/biotech with a track record in analytics, data science, or related IT/R&D functions; impact in drug discovery or early development.
- Strategic Visionary: Ability to envision and implement data-driven discovery strategies; experience transforming organizations or capabilities at scale.
- Global People Leader: Experience managing large, global teams and multimillion-dollar budgets; strong leadership and talent development across cultures/geographies.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Collaboration and influencing skills with senior levels; able to present to executive committees and governance boards.
- Scientific & Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of data science, AI/ML, analytics tools; familiarity with predictive/causal modeling, computational chemistry/biology, bioinformatics, statistics, and AI-driven drug design.
- Innovation & Results Orientation: Proven ability to translate ideas into action; capable of delivering tangible improvements and navigating ambiguity.
- Industry Perspective: Broad view of biopharma R&D and emerging tech trends; external network a plus.
