Job Description

Position Summary:

The Vice President, Commercial Development – Hematology will provide strategic leadership to drive innovation, portfolio growth, and commercial excellence within the hematology therapeutic area. This role requires close collaboration with R&D, global marketing, medical affairs, and market access teams to develop and execute comprehensive strategies that align with corporate objectives and address unmet patient needs. As a key member of the Therapeutic Area Leadership Team (TALT), the VP will engage cross-functional stakeholders to drive execution excellence, optimize the portfolio strategy, and maintain a highly innovative and competitive positioning in the hematology space.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Portfolio Development:

  • Develop and continually evolve a fully integrated Hematology TA Strategy, ensuring a robust and innovative pipeline of both new products and lifecycle management (LCM) opportunities.
  • Establish and communicate end-to-end portfolio strategy and prioritization, ensuring a balanced mix of high- and low-risk initiatives across short- and long-term horizons.
  • Provide commercial leadership to the Therapeutic Area Leadership Team (TALT), aligning cross-functional teams with the TA strategy and global priorities.
  • Continuously assess competitive dynamics and emerging scientific advancements to inform portfolio decisions.

Commercial Strategy & Market Shaping:

  • Lead the development and execution of commercial strategies for pipeline assets, ensuring seamless integration across marketing, medical affairs, market access, and insights & analytics.
  • Actively incorporate the voice of patients, physicians, and payers to ensure therapies address unmet needs and provide meaningful clinical and economic value.
  • Conduct ongoing competitive analysis, including monitoring of clinical data, new product launches, and evolving market trends to refine strategic positioning.

Business Development & Lifecycle Management (LCM):

  • Set the BD strategy for the TA, conducting initial evaluations of new product opportunities (NPOs) and making recommendations for progression to due diligence.
  • Oversee LCM initiatives, ensuring continued market success and revenue optimization through strategic indication expansion and geographic growth.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Execution:

  • Partner with R&D, regulatory, marketing, medical affairs, and market access teams to ensure seamless asset transition from early-stage development to commercialization.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop integrated project plans for R&D projects and commercial activities, ensuring successful execution.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to direct and matrixed reports, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and high performance.
  • Oversee talent development and succession planning, ensuring a strong pipeline of future commercial leaders.

Decision-Making Authority:

  • Guidance to Product Strategy Teams (PSTs) to optimize project plans and resolve challenges in collaboration with R&D leadership.
  • Prioritization of portfolio trade-offs and resource allocation based on commercial potential and strategic fit.
  • Readiness assessment and preparation for Project Go/No-Go decisions (for PRC endorsement).
  • Approval of Target Product Profiles (TPPs) and key commercial milestones.
  • TA co-lead decision-making authority on specific R&D programs at TALT level as outlined separately.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Advanced degree in business, life sciences, or healthcare-related discipline; MBA or other graduate degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech experience, with a track record of commercial leadership across multiple functions.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in a global matrixed organization.
  • Deep therapeutic area expertise in hematology and ability to synthesize complex scientific and commercial data into actionable strategies.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills to influence senior leadership and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute long-term strategic plans while balancing short-term business needs.
  • Regulatory knowledge and understanding of global regulations and cultural nuances affecting product development and commercialization.
