Role Summary

Veterinary Technician I / II supporting large animal care in a barrier facility, focused on swine care and xenotransplantation program activities. Role involves general husbandry, participation in veterinary procedures, sample collection, and maintaining health records. Potential for advancement based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform and document day-to-day swine herd activities, including general nursing care, vaccinations, medications, treatments, nutrition, and reproduction tasks (AI, boar semen collection, estrus synchronization).
  • Assist veterinarians and surgeons with operative procedures, including setup/teardown and post-operative animal care (vital checks, monitoring under anesthesia).
  • Collect, store, ship, and inventory samples (blood, nasal, tissue, etc.) from animals for health and pathogen testing.
  • Assist with post-operative procedures including imaging, biopsies, bronchoscopy, tissue procurement, and management of cardiopulmonary functions.
  • Maintain records for animal husbandry and care activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience Requirements for Vet Tech I:
    • Associate degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences with 2+ years of large animal care/handling, or
    • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences with 1+ years of large animal care/handling.
  • Education and Experience Requirements for Vet Tech II:
    • Associate degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences with 4+ years of large animal care/handling, or
    • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences with 2+ years of large animal care/handling.
  • 2+ years of experience following IACUC and research protocols and working with controlled substances.
  • 2+ years of experience performing medical tests, observing behaviors, collecting samples, and administering medication to large animals.
  • Working knowledge of animal husbandry (nutrition, reproduction, safety) and data collection/recording for large animals.
  • Working knowledge of Animal Welfare and regulations regarding animal research, USDA, FDA, and DEA.
  • Strong attention to operational planning and follow-through; ability to author and follow SOPs.
  • Ability to work under moderate supervision; may seek guidance from senior staff.
  • Must not have any other interaction with other pigs outside of the company.
