Role Summary

Veterinary Technician I / II in a swine barrier facility supporting xenotransplantation programs, responsible for general care/husbandry of pigs, and assisting with veterinary procedures, sample collection, and necropsies. Role includes maintaining health records and supporting preventive medical care and euthanasia under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform and document day-to-day swine herd activities, including herd health, nutrition, and reproduction management.
  • Assist veterinarians and surgeons with operative procedures, setup/tear-down, and post-operative animal care.
  • Collect, store, ship, and inventory samples from animals for health and pathogen testing.
  • Provide assistance with post-op procedures including imaging, biopsies, bronchoscopy, tissue procurement, and management of cardiopulmonary functions.
  • Maintain records for animal husbandry and care activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in large animal care and handling for Vet Tech I (or 1+ year with a bachelor’s degree).
  • 4+ years of experience in large animal care and handling for Vet Tech II (or 2+ years with a bachelor’s degree).
  • 2+ years of experience following IACUC and research protocols and working with controlled substances.
  • 2+ years of experience performing medical tests, observing behaviors, collecting samples, and administering medication to large animals.
  • Working knowledge of animal husbandry including nutrition, reproduction, and safety; data collection and recording of large animals.
  • Knowledge of Animal Welfare regulations regarding animal research, USDA, FDA, and DEA.
  • Strong operational planning and follow-through; ability to author and follow SOPs.
  • Works under moderate supervision; may seek advice from more senior employees.
  • Must not have any other interaction with other pigs outside of the company.
  • Physical requirements: Lift 75 lbs; Push/Pull 200 lbs on wheels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician (NAVTA) through the MN Board of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of GxP compliance.

Education

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences (as specified in qualifications).

Additional Requirements

  • Job Location: Initially remote during site construction; eventual onsite in Stewartville, MN.
  • Travel: Up to ~25% in the first year; limited travel thereafter.
