Role Summary
Vertex Spring 2026 Co-op, Medicinal Chemistry role with a 6-month program for students pursuing an undergraduate or advanced degree in Chemistry or related fields. The co-op will conduct high level organic chemistry research in the Medicinal Chemistry department, with opportunities to interact with scientists across the department and publish work in a peer-reviewed journal. This is a lab-based role aimed at providing meaningful experience and launching a career in the field.
Responsibilities
- Perform multi-step synthesis and isolation of novel compounds
- Characterize purified compounds by NMR, LC/MS, and other analytical techniques
- Optimize reaction conditions
- Write clear and accurate experimental procedures
- Participate in scientific discussions with Vertex scientists to grow scientifically
Qualifications
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Chemistry or related field
- At least 6 months of full-time lab-based organic chemistry research (co-op, summer research, graduate research, industrial experience, etc.)
- Experience with organic synthesis, purification, and analytical techniques
- Attention to detail, flexibility, and ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong problem-solving skills
- A commitment to lab safety
- Highly motivated with a strong work ethic
- Legal authorization to work in the United States (no sponsorship for internships in this part of the organization)
- Must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before June 2026
- Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from January – June 2026
Education
- Undergraduate or graduate degree program in Chemistry or related field
