Role Summary

The Vertex Scientific Writing and Disease Area Communications Co-op is a 6-month experiential program for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in a scientific field, journalism, communications, marketing, or related areas. The role involves supporting, and where appropriate leading, communications projects across disease areas in Vertex's research pipeline, producing internal and external content for disease-related programs and research. The position offers on-site work in Boston, MA, July through December 2026, and serves as a launchpad for a career in corporate communications.

Responsibilities

  • Writing and production of pipeline-related content for the employee intranet by researching, writing and packaging articles, patient and employee stories, and multimedia content.
  • Supporting disease affinity recognition by creating internal and external content to educate audiences and raise awareness for a given disease area.
  • Assisting in creating and executing communications plans for pipeline announcements and content campaigns (e.g., video series launches).
  • Supporting pipeline social media content with copy for disease recognition and pipeline-related conferences.
  • Compiling metrics from communications campaigns and providing insights to guide strategy and planning for future initiatives.
  • Providing support for ongoing communications initiatives and ad hoc projects as needed.

Qualifications

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with multiple, competing priorities.
  • Understanding of the scientific method and scientific concepts.
  • Prior internship experience in the medical/pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, or in communications.
  • Ability to deliver results with limited direction and guidance and on tight deadlines - a self-starter.
  • Highly motivated and energetic.
  • Strong work ethic and tenacity.
  • Capacity to work full-time onsite in Boston, MA.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future. Please note that Vertex does not provide sponsorship for internships or entry level roles within this part of the organization.
  • You must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before December 2026.
  • You must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from July – December 2026.

Education

  • Enrolled in a degree program leading to a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field, journalism, communications, marketing or related field. Graduates may also be qualified if they are enrolled in an advanced degree program.
