Role Description
The animal research technician provides care for companion animals in a research environment at the Kalamazoo, MI site. Primary species include cats, dogs, and rodents (may include cross-support for other species). Must properly use and maintain necessary equipment and follow departmental SOPs and Institutional Policies. Performs all phases of clinical and preclinical studies related to animal health product discovery and/or development. Weekend and holiday work expected on rotation.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily animal husbandry for cats, dogs, and rodents
- Sample collection, sample processing, executing technical aspects of study protocols, and data collection
- Maintain room/study areas: room maintenance steps, cleaning and disinfecting animal areas; ensure inspection-ready state
- Provide training on animal activities
- Perform laboratory and instrument maintenance in accordance with Animal Welfare and GXP policies
- Conduct all work per protocols and applicable SOPs; comprehend and follow research protocols
- Communicate with and assist lead technicians, manager, and researchers
- Assist and support clinical veterinarians with veterinary care
- Contribute to continuous improvement and share knowledge with the work group
Qualifications
- High school diploma + 3 years related experience; or combined education/experience and/or a valid veterinary technician license/certification
- Experience working with animals (cats and dogs preferred) in a commercial or veterinary research setting
- Proven ability to work well in a team setting
- Flexibility, enthusiasm, and adaptability
- Demonstrated math and reading comprehension
Desirable attributes
- Associate degree in related field; AALAS certification; great attitude; in vivo research experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- PPE use and very high level of personal hygiene
