Role Summary

Tax Manager based in Silver Spring, MD, onsite at least three days per week. The role supports a wide array of federal, state, and international tax compliance and planning, including internal controls and SOX compliance, and assists with fixed assets and other projects as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Manage US federal and state income tax compliance and quarterly estimate processes, including information gathering, book/tax adjustments, supporting workpapers, researching tax issues, and coordinating with third-party service providers.
  • Manage the computation of the global tax provision for income taxes under ASC 740 for domestic and foreign subsidiaries, including tax footnotes, disclosures, and supporting documentation, ensuring SOX compliance.
  • Manage federal, state, and international tax special projects (e.g., transfer pricing, research tax credits), analyze planning alternatives, evaluate impacts, and determine compliance requirements.
  • Manage foreign income tax provisions for local statutory financial statements and corporate income tax filings; coordinate with external accounting firms as required.
  • Manage tax compliance and planning related to employee benefits and executive compensation, including equity-based compensation and state-by-state reporting.
  • Manage fixed asset tax analysis and reporting, including cost segregation analyses and fixed asset roll-forwards/reconciliations for tax planning, provision, and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain understanding of the company’s operations to prepare analysis, memos, and documentation for federal, state, and local tax compliance, provision, and planning.
  • Manage global indirect tax compliance and planning (sales and use tax, personal property tax, business licenses, Canada GST/PST, VAT) whether handled internally or by external providers.
  • Prepare documentation to support federal, state, and local tax audits and respond to notices from taxing authorities.
  • Monitor and analyze tax regulatory changes that impact the business.
  • Lead and develop direct and indirect reports, including training, goal setting, performance evaluations, coaching, and recruiting support as needed.
  • Identify opportunities for tax process improvements, including automation of compliance and provision workflows and the use of tax technology tools.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, Treasury, FP&A, HR, and external advisors; forecast tax liabilities and support budgeting processes, including cash tax and effective tax rate projections.
  • Assist with preparing communications and presentations of tax considerations and conclusions to tax, finance, and business leaders.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in accounting; 8+ years of related tax experience including state and local income and indirect tax compliance (or 6+ years with a Master’s degree, CPA, or Juris Doctorate).
  • Required: 5+ years of experience in a large, multi-national corporation subject to SEC reporting requirements and/or a Big 4 or regional accounting firm.
  • Required: 2+ years of experience as a people manager.
  • Required: Experience researching and documenting tax issues, interpreting tax laws and regulations, and documenting implications for the company.
  • Required: Detail-oriented, creative, with strong problem-solving and communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; adaptability to changing work environments and priorities; proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Required: Familiarity with tax research software platforms.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (required)
  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Taxation or Juris Doctorate (preferred)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (preferred)
