Role Summary

Supervisor, Animal Technicians. Oversees and performs essential duties for the care of animals at the designated pathogen-free (DPF) facility. Leads and develops a team of animal technicians, ensuring daily animal care per SOPs and maintaining detailed records. Responsible for cleanliness and disinfection of the DPF.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, coach, train and develop a team of animal technicians; manage performance evaluations and support recruitment as needed.
  • Oversee day-to-day DPF activities: feeding, washing, care of pigs, movement of pigs, and reproduction (boar semen collection).
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain the DPF, including lawn care and trimming as needed.
  • Analyze data and processes; troubleshoot issues in animal care and pursue continuous improvement of processes and documentation.
  • Assist Vet Techs with duties such as setup and care during/after operations, operative care, sample collection, storage, shipment, and inventory.
  • Provide training on animal husbandry procedures to staff.
  • Author and revise SOPs, forms, and GMP documents; serve as subject matter expert for animal technician procedures; adhere to SOPs and QA standards.
  • Interact directly with internal Quality and regulatory agencies during inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • Associate degree in animal science or related field with 7+ years of large animal care and handling experience, or
    • Bachelor’s degree in animal science or related field with 5+ years of large animal care and handling experience.
  • Working knowledge of animal husbandry (nutrition, reproduction, safety).
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop a team of animal technicians.
  • Strong operational planning and follow-through.
  • Working knowledge of data collection and recording.
  • Knowledge of Animal Welfare and federal regulations regarding animal research (USDA, FDA, DEA).
  • Must not have any other interaction with pigs outside of the company.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Lift 75 lbs to waist level
    • Push/Pull 200 lbs on wheels

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in animal sciences or related field.
  • 5+ years of swine production experience.
  • 5+ years of experience performing medical tests, observing behaviors, collecting samples, and administering medication to large animals.
  • 5+ years of facility and equipment maintenance experience.
  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist Certification.
  • Working knowledge of facility maintenance (mechanical, electrical, plumbing).

Additional Requirements

  • Job Location & Travel: Initially remote during construction; eventual onsite role in Stewartville, MN. Up to ~25% travel in year one; minimal travel thereafter.
