Role Summary

Staff Data Engineer responsible for leading technical efforts to apply advanced analytics across clinical development, partnering with Data Scientists and Data Engineers to build and deploy scalable machine learning pipelines, and establishing standards and best practices for data products and data workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Data Scientists and cross-functional data stewards to identify data sources and enable streamlined data flow for Data Science and Analytics capabilities across clinical development and R&D.
  • Collaborates across R&D functional areas to link data and learnings for broad impact on complex, cross-functional projects involving multiple scientific and/or clinical disciplines and advanced analytics methodologies.
  • Defines best practices and standards for development of data products and service processes including data transformation, metadata extraction, workload management, and error processing management.
  • Guides the implementation of standardized, automated operational and quality control processes to deliver accurate and timely data and reporting.
  • Leads functional process improvement initiatives and 'lessons learned' events.
  • Contributes to technology strategy and drives improvements to the data pipeline, discovering new tools and techniques.
  • Employs analytics programs, machine learning and statistics to prepare data for predictive and prescriptive modeling and other analytics capabilities.
  • Develops solutions to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality; collaborates with IT to future-proof Analytics infrastructure and influences future technology investments.
  • Ensures adherence to regulatory requirements and AbbVie SOPs; stays abreast of evolving regulations related to clinical development.
  • Coaches and mentors junior team members; may include indirect supervision of staff.

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in statistics, mathematics, computer science or other quantitative disciplines with 6+ years of experience
  • Experience with Informatica tools, MarkLogic, SAS Analytics, Python, R, SQL, and AWS preferred
  • Proficiency with one or more general-purpose programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, Scala, C, C++, C#, JavaScript)
  • End-to-end experience with data including querying, aggregation, analysis, and visualization; fluency in structured and unstructured data (SQL, NoSQL) preferred
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to explain complex problems to nontechnical audiences
  • Ability to interact and influence across all management levels in a cross-functional setting
  • Biotech/pharma experience is a plus
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, ElasticSearch, etc. is a plus
  • Proven leadership traits with ability to lead and inspire staff and influence others without direct authority
