Senior Manager, Legal Operations — outside counsel management and legal billing operations.
Responsibilities
- Manage and continuously optimize a global law firm panel for competitive pricing across practice areas and geographies.
- Support RFP processes and evaluation frameworks assessing quality, value, strategic fit, and price.
- Manage outside counsel agreements (hourly/blended rates, volume discounts, and AFAs such as fixed fees and fee caps).
- Maintain rate benchmarking using market data to inform approvals, review cycles, and negotiation strategy.
- Coordinate outside counsel management infrastructure (OCGs, engagement letters, billing policies, matter budgeting, staffing approval).
- Serve as primary relationship manager for strategic law firm relationships (operations and billing).
- Identify opportunities to shift work to lower cost providers and ALSPs.
- Support annual legal budgeting and monthly forecasting (exposure, matters, budget impact).
- Use TeamConnect for ebilling/matter management (user engagement and support); oversee ebilling workflows and legal spend reporting/dashboards.
- Develop SOPs, playbooks, and training materials.
- Enforce billing compliance controls (LEDES requirements, timekeeper rate approvals, billing guideline validations, invoice review).
- Identify automation opportunities for manual billing/reporting.
- Develop KPIs/scorecards and present spend data, insights, and recommendations.
Qualifications
Required: Bachelor’s + 8 years OR Master’s + 6 years OR Ph.D.
- 7+ years progressive, hands-on experience in legal operations/legal finance/in-house legal billing with responsibility for outside counsel management and/or e-billing in a large, complex organization.
- Expertise in rate negotiation, AFA structuring, and billing guideline enforcement.
- Enterprise e-billing/matter management proficiency (TeamConnect or equivalent).
- Rate benchmarking tools/market data experience.
- Strong communication; partner across Legal, Finance, Procurement, IT; influence without authority.
- Experience in global pharmaceutical/biotech or similarly regulated industry.
- Familiarity with CLOC (or other Legal Ops competency frameworks) and benchmarking.
- Experience supporting outside counsel management programs (review OCGs; manage law firm panels).
