Overview of Position:
Device Technology Horizon Engineer evaluating delivery system and device solutions supporting AbbVie’s therapeutic pipeline and improved patient outcomes. Translates evolving therapeutic, clinical, and business needs into delivery system strategies and recommendations.
Key responsibilities:
- Identify patient, clinical, and business needs and translate them into delivery system requirements and strategic considerations
- Partner with Product Development Directors, Asset Teams, Commercial teams, and external collaborators to define future delivery system needs for early-stage pipeline assets
- Evaluate delivery technologies and track external technology trends, manufacturers, and emerging capabilities
- Develop and assess technology landscapes; identify and prioritize candidate delivery system solutions
- Compare candidates based on technical feasibility, strategic fit, scalability, and portfolio value
- Support down-selection for feasibility and development efforts
- Define feasibility assessment needs (critical performance attributes and development risks)
- Support RFP development, feasibility planning, budget estimation, and engagement with external partners
- Contribute to development timelines, feasibility strategies, and early-stage planning
- Support progression decisions for feasibility and future development pathways
- Conduct applied research and strategic landscape assessments to inform delivery direction and platform strategy
- Identify scalable platform opportunities for multiple assets
- Distill complex information into concise recommendations and next steps; apply structured decision frameworks
- Communicate across technical, strategic, and commercial functions
Qualifications:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related engineering
- Strong knowledge of design control and combination product/device development
- Experience in product development: 12 years (BS) or 8 years (MS/MBA), including 3–8 years in medical devices and drug delivery across feasibility, design, development, verification, and validation (preferred)
- Delivery system platform experience (plus)
- Excellent written and spoken communications; strong analytical/problem-solving skills
- Work effectively across disciplines in fast-paced environments; influence/negotiates globally
- Working knowledge of medical device regulations/standards (preferred)
- Travel as necessary (10–20%)
