Senior Director of Public Affairs, External Affairs (Washington, DC)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and execute proactive, integrated public affairs communications strategies/content aligned to legislative, regulatory, and public policy objectives and enterprise priorities.
- Translate complex policy topics into accessible, persuasive narratives for external audiences (policymakers, advocacy orgs, community groups, trade associations, think tanks, media).
- Monitor and synthesize public affairs developments; identify opportunities, venues, and tactics.
- Strengthen message discipline across Public Affairs, Government Affairs, Legal, and functional partners.
- Advise senior leaders on communicating/activating campaigns; ensure Public Affairs efforts complement Government Affairs policy, trade, and coalition strategies.
- Support development of content for policymakers, advocacy groups, NGOs, and external experts.
- Amplify Gilead’s voice via earned/owned/shared channels, third parties, advocates, and coalition building.
- Support issue monitoring/response, scenario planning, and executive communications; integrate policy-relevant issues into corporate reputation strategies.
Qualifications
- 10+ years experience in social media, digital communications, or content strategy.
- Strong understanding of Beltway/policy media ecosystems and digital/social targeting to reach policymakers and influencers.
- Proven strategic + hands-on content creation; comfortable supporting senior leaders.
- Exceptional written/visual/verbal communication; cross-functional partnership and influence.
- Knowledge of regulatory/political/social responsibility landscapes; translate policy and complex science into credible narratives.
Preferred
- Background in public affairs/corporate communications/reputation management/consulting/political campaigns/PR/government relations.
- Experience in global or highly matrixed corporate environment.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s + 14+ years OR Master’s + 12+ years.

Compensation/Benefits
- Other US locations: $221,000-$286,000; Bay Area: $243,100-$314,600. May include discretionary bonus, stock incentives, paid time off, and company-sponsored medical/dental/vision/life.
