Essential Duties and Job Functions:
- Set vision and develop short- and long-term strategies for new research capabilities and expanded capacity through integrated informatics and automation solutions.
- Scope, design, build, and implement high-throughput and automated molecular biology and protein sciences workflows with hardware and software engineers, integrating commercially sourced and internally built solutions.
- Lead the Protein Biochemistry team to develop and execute recombinant DNA and protein expression, purification and characterization strategies to deliver fully qualified proteins that impact Research projects.
- Advise and provide protein reagents for small and large molecule lead identification/optimization, screening assay cascades, and structural biology studies; supply critical reagents to Development and CMC functions.
- Oversee externalized CRO activities (protocol transfer, production outsourcing, and QC of protein samples) for drug discovery programs.
- Partner and communicate transparently with internal/external partners to support the Gilead project portfolio.
- Partner with IT and Informatics to streamline structured data capture for analytics and data sciences.
- Lead PhD and non-PhD scientists and manage people managers.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and record keeping.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
- Basic: 10+ years with PhD in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, structural biology, or related discipline.
- Preferred: 14+ years with PhD, postdoctoral training, and significant industry experience.
- Must have expertise in recombinant protein generation in bacterial and insect cells across multiple protein classes.
- Must demonstrate proven track record designing/building/managing high-throughput automation integrating hardware and software.
- Highly desirable: antibody discovery, biologics engineering, and developability assessment.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, data-driven, scientifically rigorous matrix environment; team-oriented, motivated, detail-focused.
- Identify/monitor team KPIs to refine capabilities and capacity.
- Strong plus: experience as small/large molecules project team leader or core team member.
