Position Overview
The Senior Director, Facilities, Utilities & Maintenance leads site operations for facilities, utilities infrastructure, and maintenance strategy to support site startup and long-term GMP biologics/aseptic manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Startup & Startup Phase
- Lead facilities, utilities, and maintenance culture grounded in safety, quality, and operational excellence.
- Build and develop the facilities/utilities/maintenance organization (recruiting and talent development).
- Define facilities/utilities priorities and maintenance strategy roadmap; implement predictive and condition-based maintenance suited to biologics manufacturing.
- Serve on the site HSE Lead Team; embed Process Safety Management considerations relevant to utilities/infrastructure.
- Act as end user representative for facilities/utilities during design, commissioning, and startup.
- Develop/adapt organizational structure to ensure resources and technical leadership ahead of GMP operations.
- Ensure systems are established and executed to maintain qualified, safe states for clean utilities, HVAC, water systems, and critical building management systems.
- Build technical relationships with corporate facilities/engineering and champion infrastructure initiatives.
Post-Startup Phase
- Sustain a high-performance operational culture.
- Execute a site-wide maintenance strategy integrating preventive, predictive, and condition-based programs to maximize asset reliability and uptime while maintaining GMP compliance.
- Ensure compliance with cGMP standards and environmental/safety requirements; keep equipment qualified and safe.
- Plan, prioritize, and execute capital projects for facilities/utilities infrastructure aligned to long-term manufacturing needs.
- Benchmark externally and leverage best practices in facilities/utility optimization and maintenance strategy.
- Establish governance and controls for facilities/maintenance activities with appropriate escalation.
- Develop future facilities/utilities/maintenance leaders for the site and global network.
Requirements
- Bachelorβs degree in Engineering or related field.
- 10+ years leading teams in pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry.
- 5+ years in API and/or aseptic manufacturing environments with direct accountability for facilities, utilities, or maintenance.
Additional Preferences
- Strong cGMP knowledge for biologics/aseptic facilities, utilities, and maintenance.
- Experience with clean utilities (WFI, purified water, clean steam, HVAC) for mAb/bioconjugate/aseptic products.
- Site-wide maintenance strategy experience (FMEA-based assessments, predictive maintenance, lifecycle asset management).
- Process Safety Management (PSM) experience for facilities/utilities with hazardous material inventories.
- Proven relationship-building across organizational levels.
- Demonstrated end-to-end leadership of facilities and capital projects (greenfield/major brownfield startups) on time and within budget.
- Experience building high-performing, engaged teams and safety/quality-driven culture.
- Experience contributing to/leading facility startups and influencing long-term maintainability/performance/GMP compliance.
