Role Summary
The Sr. Accounting Manager is an integral part of a growing accounting team and is responsible for overseeing the general ledger close process including fixed assets, leases, G&A accruals, among others. This role combines hands-on technical accounting responsibilities with people leadership and end-to-end process ownership. The position reports to the Director of Accounting and requires close collaboration with various internal business partners and third-party service providers. This role thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and is proactive, highly organized, and analytical, with strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills. This is a hybrid role requiring in-office collaboration two or more days per week at our San Francisco or Palo Alto Office.
Responsibilities
- Lead monthly and quarterly close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness for assigned accounts
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for assigned accounts
- Manage, coach, and lead two or more team members to support the Company’s evolving business needs
- Own sections of the quarterly and annual SEC filings (10-Q, 10-K), including preparation and review of footnote disclosures
- Own complex accounting areas relevant to biotech, including leasing accounting (ASC 842), fixed assets, G&A operating expenses, prepaids and accruals, and taxes
- Identify and escalate emerging accounting risks in a timely manner and recommend appropriate accounting positions
- Maintain and enhance SOX-compliant internal controls
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors and manage audit requests
- Manage strategic partnerships with FP&A, Tax, Legal, IT and Operations
- Identify control gaps and implement remediation plans
- Develop accounting policies, procedures, and documentation
- Lead process improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce manual work, and enhance data quality
- Provide mentorship and career development opportunities, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning
- Support global expansion initiatives by establishing accounting processes for new entities and jurisdictions
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA preferred
- 10+ years of relevant experience, including a combination of Big 4 (or similar) audit experience with SEC-registered clients and industry experience
- Biotech industry experience strongly preferred
- Experience with ERP and finance systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Coupa)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Proficiency in AI-enabled tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini
- AI Requirements:
- Foundational Knowledge: Understanding of AI concepts, including machine learning, natural language processing, and data-driven decision-making
- Applied Skills: Demonstrated experience using AI tools and platforms (e.g., generative AI, predictive analytics, automation solutions) to solve business problems or improve workflows
- Problem-Solving with AI: Ability to identify opportunities where AI can add value, evaluate potential risks or limitations, and implement solutions effectively
