Role Summary

Patient-facing expert on the Rare Disease patient journey and liaison for all Biogen team members involved in the process. Responsible for engaging cross-functional stakeholders to support appropriate patients starting and staying on rare disease therapies, addressing logistical and non-clinical barriers, and guiding to the appropriate resources.

Responsibilities

  • Support patients and families to navigate steps required to gain access to therapy, including disease and product education, site of care coordination, payer policy understanding, and other support services
  • Represent the patient advocate in cross-functional meetings to build and maintain accurate case plans (case histories, insurance, ongoing coverage needs, treatment plan changes)
  • Identify and resolve patient access barriers such as insurance coverage, reimbursement, financial limitations, site of care, and procurement/distribution issues
  • Collaborate with Market Access & Reimbursement to ensure appropriate reimbursement and engage with payers, specialty pharmacies, and distributors to ensure access
  • Provide emotional support to patients and caregivers and collaborate to enable progress
  • Monitor changes in the patient access environment and proactively communicate issues to patients and caregivers
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patient needs, including payer policies, plan designs and local healthcare systems
  • Develop solutions for families, including alternative insurance options and connecting to available resources
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers on product and Biogen Patient services
  • Foster greater openness and understanding of rare disease; build networks with local advocacy groups and events
  • Become an expert on the Rare Disease portfolio and Biogen resources to maximize patient/caregiver support

Qualifications

  • 5+ yearsโ€™ experience in healthcare or biotech; at least 3 years in account management, sales, and/or field reimbursement. Rare disease experience preferred
  • Track record in field reimbursement, clinical education, or pharmaceutical sales/management with payer involvement
  • Experience with physician-administered drugs (PADs)/biologics and outpatient sites of service
  • Strong understanding of field/patient reimbursement, charitable funding, and non-profit organizations
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and influencing without authority
  • Case management or direct support experience for patients/caregivers a plus
  • Familiarity with relevant legal/regulatory biotech environment
  • Strong EQ, communication, listening, and empathy skills; bilingual a plus
  • Ability to manage complex, individualized cases
  • Must be comfortable traveling 60% of the time
  • Driving is an essential duty; valid driverโ€™s license and acceptable driving record per Biogen policy
