Role Summary

As an Oracle Database Site Reliability Engineer at Lilly, you will enable reliable, secure, and high-performing Oracle Database platforms by driving automation, modernizing hybrid and cloud data services, and enforcing SRE principles to ensure enterprise-grade availability, observability, compliance, and operational excellence. The Tech@Lilly team seeks an experienced Oracle Database Site Reliability Engineer who is passionate about advancing enterprise-scale Oracle platforms, modernizing database operations, and delivering cloud-ready Oracle services. Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day administration and operational support for Oracle Database (19c, and above).
  • Perform performance tuning, patching (RU/RUR), upgrades, backup/recovery, and capacity management.
  • Ensure Oracle platform reliability, availability, and compliance with enterprise security standards.
  • Handle database incidents, requests, changes, and problem management through ITSM workflows.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and patch Oracle Database across single‑instance and RAC environments.
  • Troubleshoot Oracle database issues including wait events, locking, contention, I/O bottlenecks, and memory pressure.
  • Optimize SQL performance using execution plans, indexing strategies, partitioning, and statistics management.
  • Support new database provisioning, schema management, maintenance jobs, and platform integrations.
  • Support Oracle Database deployments on‑prem and in cloud platforms (OCI, Azure, AWS).
  • Assist with Oracle database migrations and upgrades using Data Pump, and RMAN.
  • Design and support HA/DR architectures including Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and Active Data Guard.
  • Enable cross‑region and cross‑platform disaster recovery strategies.
  • Build automation using Python, Shell scripting, Ansible, Terraform, OCI Resource Manager, and other IaC tools.
  • Implement Infrastructure‑as‑Code for Oracle database provisioning, configuration, and patching.
  • Apply AIOps practices for proactive monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive alerting.
  • Partner with Cloud Engineering, Operations, Security, and Application teams to deliver reliable Oracle database services.
  • Drive modernization initiatives through automation, observability, and AI‑driven insights.
  • Create and maintain runbooks, SOPs, and Oracle best‑practice documentation.
  • Forecast Oracle database growth and manage compute, storage, and licensing utilization.
  • Ensure Oracle platforms scale efficiently to support high‑volume enterprise workloads.
  • Enforce enterprise security standards including RBAC, least‑privilege access, encryption, and auditing.
  • Implement Oracle security features such as TDE, Database Vault, auditing, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Support compliance and audit activities.
  • Design and automate RMAN backup and recovery strategies.
  • Validate RTO/RPO objectives through regular restore and DR testing.
  • Manage backup storage and retention policies.
  • Optimize Oracle workloads across on‑prem and cloud environments.
  • Ensure cost‑efficient sizing, licensing alignment, and resource utilization.
  • Define and maintain SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs for Oracle database services.
  • Apply SRE best practices to reduce operational toil and increase platform reliability.
  • Partner with DR teams to execute Oracle DR drills, validate failover, and maintain readiness.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of Oracle environments, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Share knowledge to reduce operational silos and strengthen team capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in Oracle Database internals, including architecture, memory structures, background processes, and enterprise-scale patterns.
  • Strong experience with Oracle HA/DR technologies, such as Oracle RAC, Data Guard, Active Data Guard, and Exadata (ExaCC and Oracle Database on cloud platforms).
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve Oracle performance issues, including wait events, execution plans, indexing strategies, partitioning, statistics management, and high‑volume workloads.
  • Hands-on automation experience using Python, Shell scripting, Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent tools to reduce operational toil and standardize Oracle database operations.
  • Experience supporting Oracle databases across on‑prem, hybrid, and cloud environments (e.g., Oracle Database on Azure/AWS, Exadata Cloud@Customer).
  • Strong knowledge of Oracle security and compliance controls, including TDE, RBAC, auditing, vulnerability remediation, and least‑privilege access models.
  • Familiarity with DevOps and DBOps practices for Oracle platforms, including Git-based workflows, schema versioning, and CI/CD for database changes.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools for Oracle environments (e.g., OEM, Splunk, Grafana, custom telemetry).
  • Working knowledge of ITSM processes and tools (ServiceNow or similar) for incident, problem, and change management.
  • Exposure to containerized and Kubernetes‑adjacent workloads supporting Oracle databases (a plus).
  • Experience with Oracle backup, recovery, and data movement technologies, including RMAN, Data Pump, and CDC configuration and management.
  • Strong background in capacity planning, scalability, and cost optimization for Oracle database platforms.
  • Experience with SQL Server and Cloud Databases a plus.
  • High School Diploma/GED with 5+ years administering Oracle Database.

Additional Requirements

  • Onsite role located in Indianapolis, Indiana (relocation required).
  • Work Schedule Monday-Friday with rotating weekends
  • 11:30am – 8:30pm EST (Nov–Mar) / 12:30pm – 9:30pm EDT (Mar–Nov)
  • Less than 5% travel.
