Role Summary
Senior Scientist, Protein Analytical Characterization at AbbVie in Worcester, MA. Responsible for leading high-throughput HDX-MS workflows and advanced structural mass spectrometry methods to characterize epitopes and antigen–antibody interactions, supporting discovery pipeline projects across multiple therapeutic areas.
Responsibilities
- Independently develop and execute high-throughput HDX-MS workflows for epitope mapping analysis of biotherapeutics to support discovery pipeline projects.
- Develop, optimize, validate, and apply innovative structural MS methods (including XL-MS and CL-MS) to characterize epitopes and antigen-antibody interactions.
- Demonstrate scientific initiative by establishing novel workflows for characterization and screening of biologics—including non-traditional modalities such as multi-specifics, alternative scaffolds, and fusion proteins—to support BGM and TA projects.
- Collaborate with external partners, CROs, or vendors to advance project objectives.
- Analyze, document, and report data concisely; formulate conclusions and design follow-on experiments based on multidisciplinary inputs.
- Resolve key project challenges by leveraging analytical tools, information, and technical expertise.
- Communicate project progress, data analyses, and technical recommendations clearly and promptly to cross-functional teams and senior management.
- Present original research and findings internally and at external scientific conferences; contribute to scientific papers, patents, and technical reports as an author or co-author.
Qualifications
- BS, MS, or PhD in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related field with typically 10-12+ (BS), 8-10+ (MS) or 0-4+ (PhD) years of experience.
- Extensive hands-on experience with HDX-MS platforms and use of HDX-MS data analysis software for epitope mapping analysis.
- Strong knowledge of structural mass spectrometry technologies, including covalent labeling MS and crosslinking MS.
- Advanced proficiency with multiple mass spectrometry platforms (e.g., Orbitrap, Q-ToF) and related data analysis software.
- Familiarity or experience with coding/programming (e.g., Python, R) and developing automated data workflows is preferred.
- Familiarity with biophysical and structural methods (e.g., DLS, DSF, SEC-MALS, SEC-SAX, X-ray crystallography) a plus.
- Demonstrated theoretical and hands-on expertise with the ability to rapidly learn and apply new technologies.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently while meeting deadlines.
- Collaborative, goal-driven professional with strong verbal and written communication skills and a proactive attitude in fast-paced environments.
