Purpose
- Lead and conduct independent in vitro research on psychiatric conditions using novel cell-based strategies in support of target validation and pipeline programs.
- Work closely with the group and collaborate across AbbVie and externally.
Responsibilities
- Act as a subject matter expert in cell-based models of complex neurological disease; introduce new concepts and technologies.
- Independently design and optimize assays to characterize disease-relevant psychiatric disease models.
- Perform genetic and pharmacological modulation of targets in clonal cell lines and iPSC models.
- Collaborate with external partners (academia, consortia, CROs).
- Propose and refine experimental approaches to contribute to project/team strategy.
- Present findings; publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
- Provide scientific guidance and training to junior scientists and research associates.
- Adhere to corporate standards for code of conduct, safety, materials handling, and controlled drug/radioactive compounds where applicable.
Qualifications
Required
- BS (typically 12+ years), MS (typically 10+ years), or PhD (typically 4+ years) preferred.
- Biotech/pharma experience, preferably supporting therapeutic programs.
- Extensive experience developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing cell-based assays.
- Experience using and characterizing iPS neuron model systems.
- Proficiency in molecular biology/biochemistry, high content imaging, high throughput electrophysiology, and genetic and/or pharmacological target modulation.
- Ability to plan experiments, troubleshoot, interpret data, and resolve key project hurdles.
- Strong oral/written communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Desired
- Project leadership experience in pharma/biotech, preferably psychiatry.
- Experience in bioenergetics and metabolism.
- Psychiatry therapeutic area experience.
- Curious/creative; thinks outside the box; willing to take risks and solve challenges.
