Role Summary

The Senior Scientist will provide mechanistic and translational modeling and project support across discovery through the early stages of clinical development. The role involves establishing innovative translational modeling approaches, such as mechanistic PK/PD or systems modeling, and collaborating closely with Discovery, Development, clinical pharmacology, and other stakeholders to advance AbbVie's pipeline.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement innovative, quantitative analyses and strategies for translational modeling across Discovery and Development projects
  • Liaise with Discovery biology, pharmacology, toxicology, biomarker, QTAS and clinical scientists to generate data and knowledge supporting the generation and implementation of translational models
  • Establish and maintain collaborations with QTAS, Discovery and Clinical teams to facilitate data integration for target prioritization, biomarker selection, candidate selection, preclinical study design, human dose prediction and therapeutic index evaluation
  • Communicate strategies related to drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) and translational modeling and simulation
  • Maintain awareness of emerging literature and science in computational approaches and applications

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelors (B.S.), Masters (M.S.), or Doctorate (Ph.D.) in chemical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering; applied mathematics; quantitative pharmaceutical sciences or a related field, with 10+ years of experience with a Bachelors, OR 8+ years with a Masters, or Ph.D. with no experience required
  • Required: Hands-on experience with modeling software and programming languages including MATLAB/SimBiology, R, Python, WinNonLin/Phoenix, etc.
  • Preferred: Understanding of small or large molecule drug modalities and relevant analytical methods for measuring drug and biomarker levels in preclinical and clinical samples
  • Required: Passion for data analysis, solving technical problems and applying new technologies to advance scientific goals and enable informed decision-making
  • Preferred: Publication record demonstrating PK/PD or systems modeling examples
  • Preferred: Highly motivated, self-driven with strong communication and presentation skills, capable of leading and being led
  • Preferred: Flexibility to adapt to different projects and strong networking/relationship-building skills
  • Required: Strong communication skills with internal and external stakeholders and audiences of diverse backgrounds
  • Preferred: Experience in an experimental in vitro or in vivo biology field
  • Preferred: Interest in developing skills to support projects as a QTAS project representative in the future

Education

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in chemical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering; applied mathematics; quantitative pharmaceutical sciences or a related field
  • Advanced degree in related quantitative sciences is desirable
