The Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery (MPDD) function within the Small Molecule CMC organization is accountable for deliverables across drug discovery and development. MPDD scientists use automation and computational tools (supported by biopharmaceutics, drug delivery, and solid-state chemistry expertise) to advance candidates, advise clinical formulation strategy, identify the commercial solid form of the API, and establish structure–property–performance correlations to support robust commercial processes and aligned control strategies across drug substance and product.
Solid State Chemists (MPDD) work cross-functionally across development phases (Lead Optimization to Process Validation):
- Early development: select best molecule, identify API solid form, develop scalable API isolation processes for early clinical studies.
- Phase II: partner with engineers and formulation scientists to establish structure–property–performance correlations and deliver optimized physical-property API isolation processes.
- Final stages: align control strategies across API and drug product, support successful regulatory submissions.
Use experimental/analytical techniques, automation, and modeling tools; serve as a key leader in multidisciplinary project teams.
Qualifications:
- BS/MS/PhD in Physical Chemistry, Material Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or Chemical Engineering; 8+ years (BS), 5+ years (MS), or 0–3 years (PhD) in pharma/related industry.
- Biopharmaceutical understanding for salts/cocrystals; strong polymorphism and solid-form development knowledge; experience with PXRD, HPLC, thermal techniques, microscopy, particle size analysis.
- Familiarity with computational physicochemical assessment tools.
- Knowledge of preclinical/clinical formulation design across dosage forms.
- Material science knowledge and modeling linking physical properties to process/product.
- Automation and data mining/analytics experience; record of independently leading research.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional partnership skills.
