Responsibilities:
- Maintain day-to-day operations of the San Diego cryoEM facility, including oversight of sample preparation equipment, the Titan Krios G5 microscope, IT/data management, and ensuring optimal data quality and analyses.
- Coordinate with ThermoFisher Scientific service engineers/support to ensure instrument performance, proactive maintenance, and rapid troubleshooting for the Krios G5 and associated sample preparation devices.
- Train and mentor scientists in single particle cryoEM sample preparation, data collection, and image analysis.
- Communicate effectively with research scientists using a strong foundation in protein sciences and/or molecular biology; support interdisciplinary collaboration and drive program impact.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for protein structure determination for drug discovery projects (soluble proteins, membrane proteins, glycoproteins, and other modalities).
- Coordinate EM workflows with the BMS New Jersey site to align scheduling, standards, and data management.
- Implement, adapt, and optimize single particle workflows; develop and implement new methodologies such as micro-ED and cryo-ET.
- Ensure compliance with electronic lab notebooks, safety standards, and corporate policies.
- Interface with project leads in Disease Biology, Translational Research, Protein Sciences, Biophysics, and Computational-Aided Drug Design to enable structure-guided drug discovery.
- Present project results and workflow innovations in cross-functional meetings.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelorโs degree with 7+ years of academic and/or industry experience; or
- Masterโs degree with 5+ years of academic and/or industry experience; or
- Ph.D. (or equivalent advanced degree) in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biophysics, or related field with 2+ years of academic and/or industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Structural Biology/Molecular Biology (or related) with 2+ years laboratory-based research (ideally industry).
- 3โ5+ years hands-on experience operating and maintaining biological electron microscopes with emphasis on high-end cryoEM platforms (e.g., Krios, Talos).
- Expertise in single particle cryoEM sample preparation, data collection, and image processing across soluble/membrane proteins, glycoproteins, and complex assemblies.
- Experience supporting/troubleshooting biological and pharmaceutical projects; familiarity with medicinal chemistry and the drug discovery pipeline.
- Experience coordinating multi-site workflows and balancing multiple projects.
- Strong publication record using cryoEM to derive mechanisms of action.
- Excellent written/oral communication; highly organized; able to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Proactive in identifying operational inefficiencies and creating practical solutions.
Compensation (if applicable):
- San Diego, CA: $131,590โ$159,454 (starting compensation range for full-time employees).
