Role Summary
The Senior Risk Management Director leads the vision and strategic direction for the company's risk management function, ensuring it supports and advances organizational objectives. The role drives execution across enterprise risk management, corporate insurance, and organizational resiliency to reduce exposure, strengthen preparedness, and enable proactive risk-informed planning and decision-making. Location options include RTP, NC or Silver Spring, MD with relocation available.
Responsibilities
- ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT: Ensure successful execution of the department's strategic goals and objectives; administer all ERM program activities; assist corporate and business unit leaders in identifying exposures to loss and implementing appropriate risk management strategies to eliminate or reduce the impact of such loss; oversee the development and maintenance of a Risk Management Program Manual
- CORPORATE INSURANCE: Lead and oversee property, casualty and management liability insurance programs; negotiate coverage, pricing, structure and limits for policies and service agreements; conduct cost/benefit analyses; evaluate adequacy of limits and retentions; manage broker and insurer relationships; ensure compliance with Clinical Trial Insurance SOP
- CONTRACT REVIEW: Review leases, business development opportunities, clinical trial agreements, contracts and other legal documents to evaluate insurance and risk management wording and compliance
- ORGANIZATIONAL RESILIENCY: Oversee business continuity planning; lead the Corporate Resiliency Program; ensure critical functions can resume operations within disruption specifications; ensure regular plan testing; assist business units with facilities risk/loss prevention reviews
- Provide ongoing risk management and insurance subject matter expertise and collaboration across the organization

Qualifications
- Required: 15+ years of risk management and/or commercial insurance experience with a Bachelor's Degree in business, finance, or risk management OR 13+ years of risk management and/or commercial insurance experience with a Master's Degree in business, finance, or risk management
- Required: 10+ years of experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industry, including global clinical trial risk strategy
- Required: 5+ years of experience as a functional leader and/or people manager
- Required: Ability to read, understand, explain, and negotiate insurance policy contract language
- Required: Subject Matter Expert in commercial insurance coverages, enterprise risk management, and organizational resilience
- Required: Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Required: Strong interpersonal skills
- Required: Demonstrates strong leadership skills with team, peers and business stakeholders
- Required: Excellent administrative and organizational skills
- Required: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Required: Ability to engage confidently across all levels of the organization, including executive leadership and board delivery of risk insights with clarity, credibility and impact
- Required: Strategic mindset with the ability to execute effectively at both strategic and operational levels
- Required: Deep understanding of contractual risk and indemnification provisions within the life sciences space
- Required: Proven ability to lead enterprise risk processes, manage complex insurance portfolios, and oversee cross-functional risk initiatives
- Required: Skilled in managing a team; including developing others, giving feedback, managing conflict, and fostering collaboration across disciplines
- Preferred: Masterโs Degree (MBA, JD, or equivalent); CRM, CPCU, CIC, ARM certifications
