Senior Scientist (R2) - Internal Medicine Physiologist and Early Project Lead
Role Overview
- Help advance innovative therapies for companion and farm animals by applying expertise in disease biology, physiology, and translational research.
- In a non-lab-based role, collaborate with cross-functional scientists to design and interpret studies informing therapeutic target selection, translational strategy, safety assessment, biomarker development, and early therapeutic development.
Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to translational research strategies in companion and farm animal medicine.
- Identify and prioritize biologically meaningful therapeutic targets using physiological, clinical, mechanistic, and translational evidence.
- Evaluate therapeutic opportunities, biological risks, and potential safety considerations using mechanistic/translational thinking.
- Develop and apply biomarker/diagnostic/translational approaches to understand disease progression and therapeutic response.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in physiology, disease mechanisms, and translational interpretation of animal studies.
- Collaborate across disciplines to advance early-stage therapeutic programs; partner on study design, interpretation, documentation, and progression recommendations.
- Ensure high-quality scientific execution with appropriate documentation, animal welfare principles, and relevant regulatory compliance (GLP/GxP where applicable).
Minimum Qualifications
- DVM with internal medicine specialty training and/or PhD in veterinary physiology, comparative medicine, translational biology, biomedical sciences, or related.
- Experience studying naturally occurring or experimental disease biology in veterinary/biomedical research.
- Ability to design/lead/interpret hypothesis-driven research.
- Ability to integrate complex biological/physiological/clinical/experimental data.
- Experience with mechanistic/translational approaches (e.g., flow cytometry, transcriptomics, proteomics, biomarker development, diagnostic strategies).
- Strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- DVM boarded in internal medicine plus PhD.
- Pharmaceutical/biotech research experience and/or strong independent productivity.
- Fellowship/post-doc/clinical specialty/comparative medicine experience.
- Experience with clinical trials and/or translational/animal model/naturally occurring disease studies.
- Knowledge of statistical principles, biomarker/diagnostic strategy, and emerging technologies (e.g., AI, New Approach Methodologies).
- Proficiency in immunology/physiology/internal medicine/disease mechanisms.
