Role Summary

Senior Patent Counsel, Oncology will primarily support Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, specifically the oncology business. The role will provide a full range of patent support functions, including preparing and prosecuting patent applications, performing freedom-to-operate analysis, rendering opinions, managing outside counsel, drafting and negotiating license and collaboration agreements, providing due diligence support for business development transactions, and client counseling. The candidate will develop and execute patent strategies in a dynamic IP environment and regularly present to business clients on IP and related partnership and contractual matters. Location: Cambridge, MA; New Brunswick, NJ; San Diego, CA; or Spring House, PA.

Responsibilities

  • Primarily support Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine and more specifically, the oncology business.
  • Provide a full range of patent support functions, including preparing patent applications and prosecuting patent applications, performing freedom-to-operate analysis, rendering opinions, managing outside counsel, drafting and negotiating license and collaboration agreements, providing due diligence support for business development transactions and client counseling.
  • Develop and execute best-in-class patent strategies in an ever-evolving IP environment.
  • Regularly make presentations and engage with the business clients regarding intellectual property and related partnership and contractual matters.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a biological science is required; an advanced degree or industry experience is preferred.
  • A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, an active license to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia and admission to the USPTO or equivalent bar is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of large molecule patent experience at a law firm or in-house legal department of a multinational corporation is required.
  • Ability to articulate and positively engage clients and internal partners is required.
  • Capability to give well-organized, thoughtful presentations to upper management is required.
  • A demonstrated competency in the field of pharmaceutical discovery, development, and commercialization is required.
  • Working competency with protein, biologic, and cellular technologies with a required competency for analyzing legal matters associated with the research, development, and commercialization of protein, biologic, cellular therapeutics.
  • Substantial experience drafting and prosecuting pharmaceutical-related patent applications is required.
  • Experience in rendering patentability and non-infringement opinions is required.
  • Experience in due diligence activities, license/agreement drafting and negotiation is preferred.
