Role Summary

As a field-based medical expert, the Senior Medical Science Liaison supports Akebia’s products and therapeutic areas by advancing scientific and collaborative relationships and acting as a conduit for timely translation and communication of knowledge with key members of external healthcare communities and internal stakeholders towards optimized patient outcomes. The MSL educates external and internal stakeholders in the science behind and safe and appropriate use of our products, gathers actionable insights from external interactions, and supports the generation of clinical-scientific knowledge for special projects.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and maintain an advanced level of clinical-scientific knowledge in the anemia and CKD landscape and related disease states.
  • Identify and engage Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), Key Medical Experts (KMEs), and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) within renal/nephrology to develop relationships and exchange scientific information.
  • Accurately interpret and disseminate balanced scientific, clinical, and health economic data; evaluate new information relevant to Akebia‚Äôs products.
  • Gather, translate, and communicate actionable, strategy-aligned insights from scientific, educational, and conference interactions.
  • Respond to unsolicited ISS requests, support ISS submissions through internal review, and monitor progress of approved ISSs.
  • Deliver approved educational programs to relevant healthcare audiences.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to coordinate educational and research support for sites/investigators in clinical trials.
  • Identify educational needs within the medical community around anemia in CKD management.
  • Adhere to regulatory and compliance guidelines in all scientific dissemination, including responses to unsolicited medical information requests.
  • Attend scientific and medical meetings.

Qualifications

  • Required: Advanced clinical or medical degree (MD, PharmD, PhD, NP, PA, or equivalent).
  • Required: 3+ years of MSL experience in the renal/nephrology space.
  • Required: Strong clinical and pharmaceutical background with CKD/nephrology.
  • Required: Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Required: Excellent organizational skills.
  • Required: Excellent strategic thinking, negotiation abilities, and problem-solving.
  • Required: Ability to work independently as well as cross-functionally.
  • Required: Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a compliant and highly regulated environment.
  • Required: Travel 50-60%.
  • Preferred: Advanced knowledge and experience within Dialysis Organizations (DOs).
