Role Summary

Senior Medical Director in Clinical Development for rheumatology and autoimmune diseases. Involved across the full scope of clinical drug development from discovery research through first in human, proof-of-concept, and Phase 3 studies. Will lead one or more studies within the portfolio and collaborate with the cross-functional asset team to advance clinical programs and asset strategy. Location: South San Francisco, CA; onsite Tuesday–Thursday, open to remote applicants with monthly onsite requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the physician lead for LUMUS, a 388-patient Phase 2b trial evaluating multiple doses of ESK-001 in adult patients with moderately to severely active, autoantibody-positive SLE.
  • Provide leadership of in-stream data reviews and reconciliation efforts.
  • Authorship of clinical portions of key study documents, including Protocol Amendments and Regulatory Submissions.
  • Oversee the LUMUS medical monitor.
  • Engage externally in scientific activities, including peer-to-peer interactions with MDs.
  • Represent Alumis’ interests as a rheumatology leader and support corporate initiatives.
  • Coach, manage, and support team members to achieve goals with a collaborative approach.
  • Maintain high integrity and standards for scientific inquiry in drug development.
  • Focus on hands-on leadership and collaboration with operations to drive program success and data quality.

Qualifications

  • MD (or equivalent) with board certification in Rheumatology.
  • 5+ years of clinical development experience; lupus clinical trials experience is preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience, including managing people within industry or academic settings.
  • Strong ability to assess, understand, and communicate evolving medical and scientific information.
  • Track record of strategic, organizational, and executional skills to support multi-activity project planning and prioritization.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting timelines in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to work effectively across diverse, matrixed teams as both a leader and team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing, presentation, and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to work autonomously with a high level of independence.
  • Willingness to travel to Alumis’ HQ in South San Francisco for one week per month.
