Role Summary

Senior Engineer / System Owner – Utilities responsible for lifecycle management of site utility systems at Amgen North Carolina (ANC). Primary system owner for the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), including equalization, neutralization, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), sludge handling, high-strength waste systems, and associated automation. Provides engineering support for plant and clean utilities to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable site operations.

Responsibilities

  • Wastewater Treatment System Ownership (Primary Focus)
    • Provide lifecycle ownership of the Wastewater Treatment systems, including Equalization and Neutralization systems, DAF, Effluent handling, Sludge systems, HSPW storage, and chemical feed systems.
    • Ensure wastewater discharge compliance with pH, temperature, chloride, flow, total phosphorus, and environmental permit requirements.
    • Lead investigations related to wastewater deviations including pH excursions, DAF failures, pump/VFD faults, analyzer drift, and alarm events.
    • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
    • Optimize chemical dosing, recirculation strategies, discharge flow control, and system performance.
  • Plant & Clean Utilities Support (Secondary Scope)
    • Provide engineering support for plant utilities (chilled water, cooling towers, boilers, compressed air, HVAC, general utility distribution).
    • Support clean utilities (pharmaceutical water systems, clean steam, clean air).
    • Assist with system design, commissioning, qualification, and startup activities.
    • Troubleshoot performance issues impacting manufacturing operations.
    • Support regulatory inspections and ensure audit readiness.
  • Automation, Compliance & Reliability
    • Serve as system owner for BAS-integrated wastewater and utility systems.
    • Maintain alarm rationalization and priority strategies.
    • Advance predictive and condition-based maintenance programs.
    • Ensure compliance with cGMP, OSHA, EPA, and environmental regulations.
    • Lead capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives related to wastewater and utilities.

Qualifications

  • Required: High School Diploma / GED and 10 years of Engineering experience
  • Required: Associate’s Degree and 8 years of Engineering experience
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree and 4 years of Engineering experience
  • Required: Master’s Degree and 2 years of Engineering experience
  • Required: Doctorate Degree
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Environmental, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
  • Preferred: 4+ years of experience in industrial or biopharmaceutical utility systems
  • Preferred: Direct experience with wastewater treatment systems including neutralization and DAF
  • Preferred: Experience supporting plant and/or clean utilities in GMP environments
  • Preferred: Strong understanding of environmental discharge compliance requirements
  • Preferred: Experience working in regulated environments (cGMP, OSHA, EPA)
  • Preferred: Strong troubleshooting, technical writing, and communication skills
