Job Description

The Senior Director, Medical Communications, will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing our medical communications and publications strategy across our pipeline. This role leads the strategic development, implementation, and global dissemination of scientific and medical communication platforms and publications across all disease areas. This role ensures alignment with broader therapeutic area strategies and drives impactful scientific engagement through robust communication planning. This role fosters strong internal and external partnerships with medical experts and stakeholders to enhance scientific dialogue and engagement. This role requires strategic vision, operational excellence, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally in our innovative gene therapy environment.

The position reports to the SVP, Global Medical Affairs. We anticipate this role will require up to 40% travel including to our Lexington office.

Key Result Areas (major duties, accountabilities and responsibilities)

Publications Planning and Strategic Execution

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive publication strategy aligned with corporate and medical objectives.
  • Direct publication planning and execution, including abstracts, posters, manuscripts, and congress presentations, ensuring scientific rigor and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Monitor emerging scientific data and competitive landscape to inform publication priorities and strategic positioning.

Medical Communications Leadership

  • Lead the development of medical communication materials, including slide decks, FAQs, standard response documents, and evidence-based responses for medical science liaisons (MSLs).
  • Drive the creation of educational tools and materials to support internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and execute medical content for advisory boards and symposia.
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy, and scientific rigor across all written materials and communications.

Cross-Functional Partnership and Strategic Collaboration

  • Cultivate cross-functional collaboration among Clinical, Medical Affairs, Commercial, Market Access, HEOR, and Communications teams to drive unified messaging.
  • Generate actionable insights from scientific communications to inform medical strategy and evidence generation planning.
  • Collaborate with Medical Information function to ensure integrated and consistent scientific messaging.

Team Leadership and Operational Excellence

  • Build and manage a high-performing medical communications and publications team, including internal staff and external vendors.
  • Foster a culture of ONEuniQure prioritizing collaboration, passion for the patient, accountability, scientific excellence, and continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Engagement and External Relations

  • Foster relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), external experts, and academic collaborators.
  • Represent the company at scientific and medical conferences and meetings.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Advanced degree in scientific or medical discipline (PhD, PharmD, MD, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Minimum 8-12 years’ experience in medical communications or related roles in biotech/pharmaceutical industry.
  • 5+ years leadership experience with proven ability to build and manage high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing publication plans and medical communication strategies.
  • Experience with product launches, particularly rare diseases preferred.
  • Gene therapy, or neurology experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical trial design, data interpretation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven expertise in medical literature evaluation, publication planning, and medical writing best practices.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills in dynamic, matrix environments.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate complex scientific data into clear, concise messaging.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and adapt to evolving priorities.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex data sets into meaningful communications.
