Role Summary

The Senior Director, Immunology Strategy oversees multiple complex Immunology therapeutic or disease areas and enterprise-level initiatives, engages at the VP/executive level to set broad strategic direction, and influences the highest levels of organizational leadership. The role requires a consulting background and demonstrated leadership across multiple roles, preferably within Immunology.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and leads a range of multiple complex Immunology therapeutic or disease areas strategy and responsibility for large pan-TA initiatives cross-functional teams to drive Immunology and CBSO priorities
  • Is accountable for the overall quality, rigor, and integration of a wide range of strategic deliverables (including DAS and sLRP), spanning across multiple complex pillars. Also drives key TA-wide initiatives—with full ownership of delivery, process excellence, and organizational alignment.
  • Operates with high autonomy—drives strategic innovation and process improvement, guides and/or manages Associate Directors or Directors, and elevates the strategy team brand
  • Fosters end-to-end innovation on Immunology/enterprise-critical topics and projects through collaboration with TA Steering Committee (TASC), and other senior R&D and commercial focused leadership teams (including Asset Strategy Teams (AST) and early Brand Strategy Teams)
  • Serves as strategic partner to R&D and Commercial senior leaders across major transformational initiatives to define objectives, scope, clear deliverables and workstreams
  • Monitors, understands, and prioritizes external trends of relevance to the enterprise, and helps determine how AbbVie should prepare and/or respond
  • Helps communicate and execute TA strategies across AbbVie
  • As appropriate, facilitates identification, evaluation, and implementation of novel tools and technologies and new clinical endpoints (e.g., digital or imaging tools, biomarkers, drug delivery systems, devices, and other platform technologies) that can be employed to improve or accelerate key strategic priorities
  • In collaboration with relevant functions, drives internal and external stakeholder assessments to anticipate changes in the external environment, and to understand the patient journey and levers to improve outcomes

Qualifications

  • Minimum Years of Experience – 12+ with Bachelors, 10+ with Masters, 8+ with PhD
  • Research / development, commercial, project management, portfolio management, business development, or related experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry with a track record of expertise in one or more therapeutic areas
  • Recognized team player with proven facilitative leadership skills in a cross-functional global team environment. Proven performance in a matrix environment with ability to influence and align stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact externally and internally to support business strategy
  • Strong analytical skills. Recognized ability to evaluate complex issues from multiple perspectives to ensure that balanced risk assessments are made
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience managing large projects within a complex matrixed organization as a consultant to a pharmaceutical organization, either as an external consultant or an internal cross-functional lead

Education

  • Bachelors or equivalent degree required.
  • Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, MBA) highly preferred.
