Senior Director Commercial Assessment

Pleased to meet you! We are Galapagos, headquartered in Belgium and growing our executive team in the U.S., with a mission to deploy our capital to secure and advance transformative, clinical-stage assets, primarily in immunology and oncology, to transform patient outcomes.

We are looking for a Senior Director Commercial Assessment to strengthen our strategy team in our newly established Chicago office.

Scope of the job

As Senior Director Commercial Assessment, you will design and execute rigorous research and analysis on commercial prospects for business development candidates to support Galapagos’ portfolio building efforts. This is central to our mission as a small, nimble biotech seeking to deliver outsized shareholder value and patient benefit. You will lead analyses for specific deals, collaborate across functions, and contribute to high-stakes decision-making with data-driven insights. This is a hands-on, intellectually demanding role requiring strong industry fluency and business judgment, and it will offer extensive exposure to executive management. In this function, you will report directly to the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO).

Your role

Opportunity Evaluation

  • Conduct deep-dive commercial assessments of licensing and M&A opportunities, including market sizing, competitive analysis, and revenue forecasting.
  • Build and maintain market and product revenue models to support deal valuation and risk assessment.

Stakeholder Insights

  • In the context of commercial evaluations, design, execute, and interpret primary research in major markets with key opinion leaders (KOLs), community physicians, payers, and (when appropriate) patients and caregivers.
  • Collaborate with external consultants and agencies to gather robust qualitative and quantitative insights.

Competitive Landscape Analysis

  • As key input to corporate market intelligence efforts, map current and future competitors, including pipeline assets, launch timelines, and differentiation strategies.
  • Develop perspective on global commercial implications of different competitive product and company profiles.
  • Track regulatory and clinical milestones of key competitors.

Pricing and Market Access

  • Evaluate reimbursement dynamics, pricing benchmarks, and payer behavior in corporate priority disease states across major markets.
  • Identify risks and opportunities related to pricing, reimbursement, and market access.

Portfolio Support

  • Support internal portfolio reviews by analyzing commercial value under different development or market scenarios.
  • Profile and maintain knowledge bases and market models on key indication spaces within priority TAs, in collaboration with CBO (Chief Business Officer) team.

Collaboration, Presentation and Communication

  • Participate in diligence teams and contribute to BD negotiations from a commercial standpoint.
  • Prepare high-quality materials for internal review, executive meetings, and board updates.
  • Summarize findings into clear, actionable insights.

Who are you?

  • 7-10 years of experience in commercial assessment, new product planning, or commercial analytics in the biopharma industry or related consulting
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to independently manage complex evaluations
  • Deep understanding of drug development, revenue forecasting, commercial strategy & operations, and payer dynamics
  • Confident communicator comfortable interfacing with senior leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional projects in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Advanced degree preferred (MBA, PhD, MD, or equivalent)
