Role Summary

Senior Director, Business Development at Zymeworks. The role is hybrid in Bellevue, WA or Vancouver, BC with a minimum of 3 days onsite. The position serves as a key member of the business development transactions team, acting as the deal architect and lead negotiator for partnering opportunities aligned with corporate initiatives, and presents analyses to internal and senior management teams.

Responsibilities

  • On a project-by-project basis, provide partnering and project management skills through the entire deal making process to secure and implement attractive deals.
  • Develop partnering structures tailored to the profile of each envisioned collaboration.
  • Propose deal terms and negotiation strategy to senior management.
  • Drive contribution from various functions to develop robust business cases and derive clear recommendations.
  • Identify and resolve issues promptly, gather and analyze information, escalate to senior management quickly.
  • Work closely with BD leadership and senior management to understand key partnering priorities, drive alignment, and proactively communicate project updates.
  • Facilitate decision making at governance deal committees by preparing comprehensive presentations/memos.
  • Monitor the external business environment and maintain a knowledge base of licensing transactions and other partnering activities.
  • Build and strengthen broad industry network to facilitate deal making.
  • Maintain relationships with partners through alliance management activities post-deal.
  • Represent the company at scientific, investor and partnering conferences.
  • Lead to foster an environment of effective and collaborative working relationships.

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree (business or relevant scientific field; PharmD, MD, PhD) and a minimum of 10 yearsβ€šΓ„Γ΄ related experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry.
  • Track record in business development, preferably with experience in oncology and autoimmune diseases.
  • Expertise in building detailed valuation models and presentations; experience with term sheets and contract negotiations.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage concurrent deliverables in a milestone-driven environment.
  • Strong leadership, with ability to manage, develop and empower teams.
  • Experience leading strategic planning processes in a complex cross-functional environment.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to anticipate road-blocks and map out next steps.
  • Proven track record in licensing, partnership and acquisition deals from initial terms to closure.
  • Understanding of pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, drug development process, trends, and competitive landscape.
  • Outstanding competitive analysis and opportunity identification skills.
  • High integrity and ethics; attention to detail; strong written and oral communication; ability to influence senior leaders.
