Role Summary

Senior Data Scientist II โ€“ Therapeutic Modality Insights & Competitor Intelligence, based in Cambridge, MA, leads advanced data science work on AbbVieโ€™s SPICE team to advance therapeutic modality knowledge and intelligence solutions. The role focuses on extracting, harmonizing, and monitoring knowledge from literature, patents, news, and competitor intelligence to support R&D, CBSO, and enterprise-wide business strategies. It requires strong science and technology expertise, rapid learning of new therapeutic modalities, and leadership in developing GenAI-based and agentic knowledge solutions that drive competitive advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, design, and implement advanced AI-powered published insights solutions (incl. agentic workflows) that address significant scientific and strategic trends and knowledge gaps in therapeutic modalities.
  • Develop and deliver innovative, high-quality intelligence solutions that systematically extract, analyze, summarize, integrate and proactively monitor key knowledge about novel therapeutic modalities (such as gene/cell therapies and innovative RNA or antibody-based drugs) to address urgent scientific and business needs.
  • Apply broad expertise in knowledge & information science, Generative AI/NLP, data warehousing, and software development to build robust data pipelines and analytical workflows for large and complex published (often unstructured) data, including literature publications, patents, news/press releases, and competitor pipelines.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of pharmaceutical R&D, drug development, and therapeutic modality trends.
  • Operate with high autonomy and productivity, proactively tackling complex problems and driving multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Pursue and evaluate relevant external and internal leads in novel modalities, new technologies, and data sourcesโ€”rapidly incorporating new findings into project strategies and generate novel, actionable insights for R&D and business strategy.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with scientific, corporate strategy, and other R&D teams to ensure solutions meet real-world needs, fill knowledge gaps, and democratize access to key intelligence.
  • Mentor or supervise junior data & information scientists.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging trends, methodologies, and technologies that can advance therapeutic modality & competitor intelligence at Abbvie.
  • Author high-impact presentations and publications, communicating findings to diverse audiences.
  • Ensure adherence to AbbVie's standards of compliance, data security, GxP, and code of conduct.
  • Achieve great results, while overwhelmingly demonstrating key AbbVie values and behaviors.

Qualifications

Required:
  • PhD (with 4+ years relevant experience) in life sciences (biology, pharmacology, chemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, pharmacy, medicine, biomedical data science, or related). Equivalent experience considered at Master's (10+ years) or Bachelor's (12+ years) level.
  • Deep knowledge of emerging therapeutic modalities, such as biotherapeutics (ADCs, mAbs, multispecific antibodies, cell therapies, etc.), different types of degraders, gene therapies (AAV, lentiviral, CAR-T, CRISPR, etc.), RNA therapies (mRNA, siRNA, ASO), as shown in recent industry advances.
  • Demonstrated leadership in designing and delivering creative technology solutions that advance business and scientific objectives; proven ability to translate complex scientific/business questions into actionable, large-scale information solutions.
  • Solid background in programming, informatics, and data science. Proficiency in Python required.
  • Hands-on expertise with extraction and integration of knowledge from literature, patents, competitive intelligence databases (e.g., Citeline, Cortellis), and news/press release sources.
  • Competence in using GenAI models for knowledge extraction (including prompting, pitfalls, etc.).
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new advances in therapeutic modalities and information technologies and balancing multiple projects with shifting priorities.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with superior attention to detail and high degree of reliability and integrity.
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills; proven ability to present complex concepts clearly to scientists, non-scientific audiences and different leadership levels.
  • Demonstrates scientific curiosity, technical creativity, and a proactive drive for innovation to break new ground in the field of information analysis and insights generation.
Preferred:
  • Pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, dynamic, multidisciplinary, and collaborative settings and global teams.
  • Familiarity with data engineering, software development principles, relational databases and SQL (e.g., Oracle, Hadoop) as well as common formats/APIs (REST, XML, JSON, Python libraries like Pydantic).
  • Experience with embedding Gen AI models in larger Python-based workflows to automate knowledge extraction tasks.
  • Basic understanding of agents and agentic workflows (MCP, A2A).
