Role Summary

Senior Clinical Veterinarian responsible for clinical care and surgical support of research animals, monitoring animal health at external vendors, and providing professional expertise to R&D teams. Works to integrate 3Rs and AbbVieβ€šΓ„Γ΄s Global Animal Welfare Policy in the local Comparative Medicine program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership or support in clinical or surgical aspects of veterinary care, and oversee the monitoring of vendor animal health programs, as directed by the supervisor.
  • Conduct site visits at the AbbVie Bay Area Vivarium and provide veterinary services, including protocol reviews, consultations, and on-call support, as needed.
  • Lead the site's initiative to enhance the animal behavioral management program under the supervision of Comparative Medicine leadership.
  • Lead the siteβ€šΓ„Γ΄s hands-on training program for anesthesia and euthanasia under supervision.
  • Execute and provide clinical oversight including diagnosis and treatment for disease processes in research animals.
  • Provide surgical support to research areas including rodent and non-rodent species.
  • Assist with monitoring of vendors and collaborate with the Global Animal Welfare Committee to assure animal health.
  • Incorporate the 3 R's in daily decision-making and guidance to research staff.
  • Serve as a resource to the IACUC; collaborate with researchers on animal models and production operations within facilities.
  • Contribute to short-term operations strategies and lead the animal care staff in daily operations and facility oversight.
  • Provide leadership that encourages innovation and accountability.
  • Contribute to staff development and communicate successes and failures to reward or correct actions.
  • Manage discretionary items in the functional budget.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution.
  • ACLAM boarded with 3β€šΓ„Γ¬5 years of lab animal experience OR DVM-PhD with at least 2β€šΓ„Γ¬4 years of lab animal experience.
  • Understanding of applicable local, state, and federal regulatory framework.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and technical writing skills.
  • Knowledge in laboratory animal medicine or demonstrated strong clinical/surgical skills benefiting the program.
  • Technical expertise in dosing, bleeding, necropsies, anesthesia, and minor surgical procedures in laboratory animals.
  • Veterinary state licensure (or equivalent); licensure in the state of employment preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in biomedical research.
