Summary
The Senior Associate Scientist I, Isotope Production will provide hands-on laboratory support for radiochemical and analytical work associated with isotope production programs, assisting with experiments and process steps supporting production of Actinium-225 through cyclotron irradiation of Radium-226 targets.
Job Responsibilities
- Participate in experimental design for R&D radiochemical processes for production, purification, and recovery of Actinium-225 and related isotopes.
- Execute separation/purification using chromatography, precipitation, solvent extraction, and other radiochemical techniques.
- Run process scale-up studies from benchtop to process scale for shielded hot cells.
- Perform hands-on lab work with radioactive materials, following radiological safety practices.
- Maintain process flow diagrams, equipment logs, SOPs, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate on process equipment setup, automation systems, and routine facility operations.
- Independently execute target processing, radionuclide recovery, waste handling, and basic troubleshooting.
- Assist with literature review, data gathering, and basic experimental data analysis.
- Support technology transfer documentation/execution.
- Work with external vendors to install and maintain laboratory equipment.
Education and Experience
- BS/MS in Radiochemistry, Chemistry, or related field, with 2+ years of direct experience with radioactive materials.
- Additional cGMP and chemistry laboratory experience preferred.
Skills and Qualifications (Preferred)
- Exposure to alpha-emitting isotope systems (e.g., Actinium-225, Radium-226, Thorium-229, Thorium-228, Radium-224).
- Willingness to work with hot cells, gloveboxes, shielded enclosures, and remote handling.
- Familiarity with cyclotron-produced radioisotopes and post-irradiation target processing.
- Experience with ion exchange/extraction chromatography, solvent extraction, radionuclide recovery; analytical instrumentation (HPGe, alpha spectroscopy, ICP-OES/ICP-MS, liquid scintillation).
- Strong attention to detail, data documentation, and technical writing; ethics/integrity.
