Role Summary

Senior Associate Scientist in Tarrytown, NY responsible for developing and characterizing cellular and animal models to test novel therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases. You will collect disease-relevant tissue, perform downstream processing and analyses (biochemical assays, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy), and design cell-based assays and other technologies to understand neurodegeneration. You will analyze data, participate in research studies, and present findings internally and externally in a collaborative, cross-functional team. Local telecommuting may be permitted up to 1 day per week.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and characterize cellular and mouse models of neurological and neurodegenerative disease.
  • Collect disease-relevant tissue from animal models and perform downstream processing including biochemical analysis, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.
  • Design and implement cell-based assays and other novel technologies to study mechanisms of neurodegeneration.
  • Analyze and evaluate data; present findings and contribute to cross-functional team discussions.
  • Participate in research studies to understand biology behind neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., ALS); present data internally and externally.
  • Collaborate in a cross-functional team environment; may involve internal and external presentations.
  • Local telecommuting permitted up to 1 day per week.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Biotechnology or related field; 1 year of experience in the biotechnology industry.
  • Experience with: Development and characterization of cellular and mouse models of neurological and neurodegenerative disease; handling of neonatal and adult mice; intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of adeno-associated virus (AAV) into neonatal mouse pups; mouse dissection including microdissection of sub-regions of CNS tissue; processing cell and tissue samples for biochemical analysis (Western blot, ProteinSimple Wes/PeggySue, ELISA, MSD); DNA and RNA isolation and real-time qPCR; downstream processing of mouse tissue (sectioning, immunostaining, immunohistochemistry, advanced microscopy such as confocal imaging and high-throughput plate readers like Opera Phoenix); in vitro cell culture systems including transformed cell lines and human iPSCs with neuronal differentiation; data analysis using Halo, GraphPad Prism, Excel and PowerPoint; compiling data into presentation formats and presenting work internally and externally in cross-functional discussions.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Biotechnology or related field.

Skills

  • Cell culture (transformed cell lines and human iPSC-derived neurons)
  • In vivo and ex vivo mouse model work, including dissection and ICV injections
  • Molecular biology and biochemistry techniques (Western blot, ELISA, MSD, capillary electrophoresis)
  • Histology and immunohistochemistry; confocal imaging; high-throughput microscopy
