The Scientist I is a key contributor to the Histotechnology team within the Biology Department, supporting preclinical drug-development programs by planning and executing tissue collection strategies; processing, embedding, and sectioning specimens; performing histologic and immunohistochemical stains; and summarizing results for study teams.
Onsite 5 days a week in San Diego.
Responsibilities:
- Translate study requirements into histology work plans; present interim results to stakeholders.
- Coordinate specimen receipt, accessioning, labeling/barcoding, and chain-of-custody; maintain audit-ready records in LIMS/ELN.
- Perform tissue processing and paraffin embedding; microtome and cryosection animal tissues (5–7 µm); complete re-cuts and serial levels with minimal artifacts.
- Execute H&E, special stains, and IHC/IF (manual/automated), including antigen retrieval, antibody titration, protocol design, troubleshooting; contribute to validation (e.g., RNAscope/miRNAscope, multiplex IHC/IF).
- Perform microscopic QC, identify representative regions, support digital pathology; compile data summaries/presentations.
- Adhere to SOPs/quality; follow biosafety and chemical-safety procedures; participate in deviations/CAPA; contribute to continuous improvement (e.g., 5S/Lean).
- Operate and maintain/calibrate microtomes, cryostats, stainers, printers, microscopes; track reagents/antibodies and coordinate ordering/lot qualification.
Requirements:
- BS or MS in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related.
- BS + 7+ years relevant histology experience, or MS + 3+ years academic/industry lab experience.
- Proficiency with microtomes, cryostats, slide/cassette printers, automated stainers, microscopes; practical tissue composition knowledge.
- Extensive IHC/IF staining experience, including protocol development/validation/troubleshooting (antibody titration, antigen retrieval).
- Strong project/time management; effective written/verbal communication.
- Advanced computer skills (e.g., Excel and imaging software).
- Ability to process valuable/delicate samples and prepare tissue for pathologist interpretation.
Preferred:
- Histotechnology degree (HT) or HTL(ASCP) certification.
- Experience validating RNAscope/miRNAscope and multiplex IHC/IF across tissues/species.
- Familiarity with LIMS/ELN and digital pathology/whole-slide imaging.
Compensation/Benefits:
- California pay range: $115,000–$125,000 USD. Arrowhead provides competitive salaries and an excellent benefit package.
