Role Summary

Project Engineer I at Johnson & Johnson will serve as technical support and owner-side representative within the Engineering & Property Services (E&PS) organization. The role provides engineering, design, construction, and technical support across capital projects while ensuring compliance with J&J Standards and Procedures (SDPs), EHS requirements, and applicable regulatory frameworks (FDA, EU, cGMP, and others). For larger, complex capital programs, the Project Engineer will act as a work stream support role supporting senior PMs; for small to mid-size projects this role may take on direct responsibility to deliver certain work streams within the program. Location: Spring House, PA, or New Brunswick, NJ.

Responsibilities

  • Project Support & Delivery: serve as Project Support for small capital projects, accountable for scope, technical delivery, execution, and coordination across subject areas.
  • Act as Engineering or Workstream support on large-scale capital projects, supporting integrated master schedules, program management, and multi-functional alignment.
  • Support projects through all phases: concept, feasibility, design, construction, commissioning, qualification, and operational handover.
  • Budget Management: Prepare and support project budgets, including materials, labor, and other associated costs, while controlling project costs by approving expenditures and administering contracts.
  • Progress Monitoring: Track project performance, analyze completion of key goals, and adjust schedules as necessary to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Documentation: Maintain project documentation, including detailed project notes and records, and prepare status reports for team members and upper management.
  • Contracting, Cost, Schedule & Risk Support: Support development and review of engineering estimates and cost forecasts, contractor scopes of work and technical exhibits, change orders and technical impacts. Partner with Project Managers to track schedule risks and mitigation actions, identify technical and compliance risks early, support governance reviews and decision-making.
  • Construction Management & Safety: Provide owner-side construction support, including technical support and issue resolution, constructability and safety reviews, contractor coordination and performance monitoring. Ensure alignment to J&J Employee Health & Safety (EHS) standards, construction safety policies, and safe work practices. Participate in field walks, progress reviews, system completions, and punch list resolution.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or university degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or related field), Architecture or Construction Management from an accredited institution is required

Qualifications

  • Required: 0-2 years of proven experience supporting capital projects in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or other regulated environments; industrial, laboratory, or manufacturing facilities
  • Required: Demonstrated experience collaborating with A&E and CM firms in an owner-side role
  • Required: Hands-on experience in Asset Management, Maintenance, Reliability and Project Engineering
  • Preferred: Demonstrated project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution skills in pharmaceutical or highly regulated manufacturing environments
  • Preferred: Strong collaborator management, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Preferred: Experience managing contractors, vendor relationships, and procurement support

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Microsoft Project and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in English (oral & written)
