Role Summary
Principal Scientist, Discovery Biomarkers focusing on the discovery of biomarkers to support progression of therapeutic candidates from discovery to early clinical development, with a focus on inflammation and rare disease. The role collaborates across development and research groups to drive biomarker discovery and translational biomarker activities.
Responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive disease area expertise for key indications within the inflammation therapeutic area
- Support strategic initiatives by providing deep scientific knowledge of inflammatory pathways and mechanisms
- Stay current with emerging research and therapeutic approaches in inflammatory diseases
- Identify, evaluate, and prioritize relevant target engagement biomarkers for inflammatory conditions
- Define quantitative thresholds for biomarker efficacy and clinical relevance
- Integrate exposure data with pharmacodynamic modulation information to create comprehensive temporal profiles
- Design and execute biomarker discovery strategies across multiple programs using real-world, clinical, and preclinical data
- Demonstrate exceptional thoroughness and expertise when conducting complex immunology-related assays
- Generate high-quality pharmacodynamic data to inform clinical development decisions
- Assess population heterogeneity through sophisticated biomarker measurements
- Support companion diagnostic test development when required for targeted therapies
- Evaluate the applicability and relevance of preclinical findings from model systems to human contexts
- Bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications
- Support translational biomarker activities for therapeutic assets, including participation in investigator meetings and advisory boards
- Collaborate on investigator-sponsored studies for correlative biomarker research alongside Clinical Biomarker leads
- Work effectively in a highly matrixed environment to drive scientific and technical innovation
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in Inflammatory Diseases, Clinical Biomarker & Diagnostics, Therapeutic Discovery, Human Genetics, and Computational Biology
- Mentor laboratory scientists to ensure generation of high-quality, reliable experimental data
- Provide scientific leadership and guidance to junior team members
Qualifications
- Required: Doctorate degree PhD, PharmD, MD with relevant postdoctoral experience and 2 years of Discovery Biomarkers experience; OR Masterโs degree and 5 years of Discovery Biomarkers experience; OR Bachelorโs degree and 7 years of Discovery Biomarkers experience
- Preferred: PhD or MD PhD, with postdoctoral training and industry experience in immunology, cell and molecular biology, or biochemistry
- Biomarker Clinical Development experience is preferred
- Demonstrated track record of independent critical thinking and scientific achievement in cell and molecular biology and biochemistry as demonstrated by multiple high impact publications
- Demonstrated experience in leading independent research and/or drug development
- Experience with implementing multiple technology platforms
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collaborate and troubleshoot to solve problems
- Experience working in teams, managing scientists and consistently delivering results
